511902 2007-11-02 18:28:00 I've been reading mixed reviews of the DVDR3455H all over the place, and to be honest it's been more bad than good, but to me I can live without being able to watch avi files etc from a flash drive, and my current DVD recorder has a slow menu system so that's nothing new etc. The latest firmware (R19.15 - released 15th May 2007) seems to have fixed some of the bugs too.

Basically my situation is I have points through an incentive at work, and can get one of these for free. I've emailed the people it's through and asked how the warranty works, as I know there might be a chance it needs to be sent away at some point. I was just wondering if it's really worth it. There's not much else that's worth getting through the incentive, and I have plenty of points to spend...

Any thoughts or opinions would be helpful. Might get this thread back on track ;)

Go for it. Fee is good  and any sort of DVD Recorder will be heaps better than VHS tape. Get into the 21st century! I'd rather have a cheapo Transonic than a VCR.

Thanks for getting this thread back on topic. Hijackers go elsewhere - nearly 30,000 page views on this thread and they want info on DVD recorders!!

511905 2007-11-02 20:00:00 User Review of Transonic DVD Recorder with 80 Gb hard drive model TC2058DR

I will begin with the good points and end with the reasons I am returning the Transonic for a refund, after only having it for two hours . You may not be bothered with the negative points so read on if you are considering purchasing one of these recorders .

I finally (after being stuffed around by Warehouse for 3 weeks . . . that should have rung alarm bells) picked up my Transonic unit and plugged it in today . . . . . . .

Yup good features etc, and at $214 I wasnt going to complain . . . . . but now I think I am .

Have plugged it all in, threw a DVD in, played fine . Good sound and picture . Switched to TV, and got a shocking picture and sound . Thought maybe Id have to retune it all, so did that, but still shocking picture and sound . Sound issue is a huge amount of humming/buzzing and the picture is flickering like crazy . . . . . . . . . :annoyed:

After a 3 week wait to get this sod of a thing, I dont really want to have to return it so I might hang out till Monday and ring the help number in the manual and see what they say . . . . Im suspecting a stuffed unit . :badpc:

In the meantime, Im going to strip out everything of my entertainment unit and recheck all cabling etc (mainly to make sure the cat hasnt chewed on any more cables) in the small hope its something stupid like a stuffed cable causing the issue . . . . :dogeye:

511906 2007-11-02 22:18:00 xpd - Check for a faulty aerial connector to the DVDR.

Another person posted here that the help desk was very good, solving their problem quickly.

$214 is a bargain, even if you have to exchange it for a working unit.

511907 2007-11-02 22:50:00 On the other hand,it's true, mostly, that you get what you pay for. Cicero (40)
511908 2007-11-02 23:56:00 And if you pay for a tuner card and a moderately-specced ($200ish) PC, you can put MythTV on it and get a whole lot more bang for your buck. Erayd (23)
511909 2007-11-03 04:51:00 i got a philips one in the top post about 8 months ago for about $699.99 and i gotta say its a piece of crap although its convenient for recording tv showd on days i wont be home but reading all this i now know it was a waste of money. i thought all dvd recorders couldnt record from dvds from reading the manual (even though thats what i bought it for) and i also didnt know you could watch movies while it is recording. last time i tried it didnt work and can someone please tell me how to rename the titles because if the name is small or has a space bar in it i cannot put in a empty space any ideas? nerd (109)

Can we agree,we leave Philips alone?
