| 511853 | 2007-10-04 17:39:00 | allblack, yes I have read how good they were but did not expect how much it has changed our viewing. there are programs we get now that would have been out of the question due to lack of tape space and now we can select which portion we want or don't want to watch, not possible, not practicable, with VHS recorders. Just gets better aye! :D Bathurst on Sunday.....11:30am to about 7pm. Will record the whole thing, and depending on the quality of the race I will edit out what needs to go, and then copy it to a DVD. Brilliant. |

On the remote press the chapter button which is below "display" on the right side edge. To the left of that button is the one that advances by 30s, 1m, 1m30s, etc. have fun :D |

Will record the whole thing, and depending on the quality of the race I will edit out what needs to go, and then copy it to a DVD. Brilliant. Editing using the A-B Erase function is the second best function, next to advert skipping. I'll often edit out the adverts or sometimes sections of the program so we can view without having to fiddle with the remote. Ruby Wax's Commercial Breakdowns on Prime is a good example as I cannot stand her plus only a few of the adverts are really funny. Last week a friend came over with her two young boys and to amuse them I scrolled through the 80 odd saved titles on the hd and showed them the best funny commercials. Their reaction was interesting. While they liked the funny adverts they went ga ga about the dvd-r itself - never saw one before - and pleaded with their mum to get one! :p :D |

I thought I was buying the same version as my old one which I lost when it became Relationship Property :p ....but it seems I got the model below it. Teach me to rush these things. So editing isn't as easy as it was. But they're still an awesome toy. |

I had been through the Manual a couple of times trying to locate a reference to 'skipping ads' that they mentions in the blurb and now you have enlightened me. Cheers. |

| 511858 | 2007-10-04 23:33:00 | I have a new Sony RDR-HX750 dvd hard drive recorder . Just been doing a marathon reading through this interesting thread (do we get prizes for having done that :p ) . Doing so because Mrs Misty and I thinking of buying one . My first stop was to read the "Consumer Magazine" report which was done in Dec 2006 so a bit out of date but certainly not to be ignored . They said that the best overall model, for the second review in a row is Sony - on that occasion model RDR-HX710 . Now having visited Harvey Norman, Bond & Bond I find that the subsequent model is the one you have bought Rutherford . The model number sometimes has an S on the end to show it is silver, otherwise it is black . Now six months later one improvement is that the 750 has HDMI output with 1080p upscaling (whatever that last bit means !) . I am told however that means you can record from HDMI but when you play it will not show in HDMI . The price is really good being $575 from Harvey Norman (without useful cables) . $593 from Bond & Bond . Neither have any left in stock so there will be at least a week's wait . Seems they are focusing more on the 250Gig model (not many would need that size - but then many people overbuy) . Rutherford - you may be able to tell me what one feature menas "Intelligent Scene Chaptering" ? Is that something that it picks up from the broadcast or is it intuitive ? :stare: Also does your model have DVD Zoom ? :nerd: Misty  |

These things aren't gimmicks . . . you won't get tired of them . Rutherford may be able to answer your question better, but on my previous model the recording could be shown in segments . For example, a two hour movie might have 12 segments (for want of a better word), and nine times out of ten the ad's would be in a smaller segment all by themselves . ( I think it uses changes in volume/tone etc to pick when the ad's begin and end ) . So before watching the movie, you could go through and delete the smaller segments, takes about 2 mins, then watch the movie without them! Also useful before dubbing the recording to a DVD if you wanted to keep it . It's genius . . . . just make sure you look at the manual before buying to make sure the feature is there . |

| 511860 | 2007-10-05 01:40:00 | Don't know about commercial tapes but probably not as they have an inaudible signal that prevents copying. The tapes I have copied are holiday videos that I have shot and some VHS tapes from TV made on the old video recorder but that was only during the first days of owning the new dvd-r. Have you transferred the VHS tapes to DVD via the hard drive recorder? If so, how does the quality of the DVD result compare to the tape? I wish these machines could record captions when recording TV programs. I would be out like a shot to get one then. :( |

Actually I am not familiar with the term "Intelligent Scene Chaptering" but it must refer to the process when I described how this dvd-r manages to skip adverts. You can opt to place automatic chapters every 10 min or so but I am not sure if this is only for making DVDs from the HD or recording TV programs. "Intelligent Scene Chaptering" is not picked up from the broadcast - it is intuitive. Foxy, the quality is superb. No degradation compared to the tape. There are 9 settings for quality / picture resolution. The default setting is 4th from the highest setting. Recordings from the TV made on the 5th and 6th settings are virtually the same and most people would not notice any difference between the 7th setting and the original TV picture. Viewed on a 29 in TV so if you have a 42 or 50 inch plasma/LCD screen then probably you will notice a difference when getting down to the 7th setting. You won't go wrong getting a Sony RDR-HX750, and $575 is a good price. Most shops will let you do an exchange within a week or two but when I looked around the Sony was the best and remember it is HDMI capable. |
