:) The Transonic has VPS/PDC Time Adjustment which means that if you input the announced time and date of the programme that you want to record, and that programme happens to run late, for example, VPS and PDC will automatically correct the timed recording on your recorder.

Do the TV stations in NZ broadcast the corresponding signal for this feature to work?

I will begin with the good points and end with the reasons I am returning the Transonic for a refund, after only having it for two hours.
The Warehouse has this on sale for $330, marked down $100.

I have a rule with Warehouse purchases.
Buy nothing containing electronics, moving parts or electrical components.

511844 2007-05-24 20:00:00 Conclusion about the Transonic DVD Recorder with 80 Gb hard drive model TC2058DR

If lack of G-Code scheduling is not an issue with you, it is a good buy. I recommend paying an extra 10% for the extended warranty of 4 years total. If you can afford to pay double, get a Pioneer or Sony, but if you want a bargain go for the Transonic. It will not have 'consumer status' and will not be as robust as a pricey brand, but if you don't mind a cheapie, go for it. BTW, it did have editing features for making disks.

Be aware of The Warehouse money back guarantee policy. See my thread on this here:

511845 2007-05-25 04:01:00 My Sony has "VPS/PDC Time Adjustment" option but Sky does not transmit this signal so option is useless.

I read through all the messages and found a few surprising things:
1. Someone actually uses G-Codes? I tried it once, on my old VHS recorder but found that margins are too tight and slightest delay will cause ending to not be recorded.
2. Slow FW/RW considered a must? As long as recording editing provides something similar (e.g. dragging a slider for fine manual position adjustments when cutting out ads) I don't really have any use for it; never used it when viewing.
3. Sony HDD a good product? I have the original HX900, bought it when it was still high end -- cost me over $1000. What utter piece of junk! Only 8 timers, when editing on HDD you CANNOT split a recording into two pieces (so if you recorded something that's 4 hours long and want to transfer it to DVD, you cannot split it into two 2 hours pieces but have to re-encode the whole thing in lower quality so that it fits on one disc)... etc. -- forums are full of "praise" for this product. And even though it was their high end at the time, Sony couldn't be bothered to issue firmware fix at least for the most annoying bugs. I'd have returned it immediately but my wife is huge sucker for Sony and wouldn't even discuss it. I guess I should have checked the forums first... I'm never buying another Sony piece of junk again.

511846 2007-05-25 06:05:00 TheM, thanks for info, some good points there.
:dogeye: Too bad "VPS/PDC" is not in NZ. Maybe some day...

BTW, yes I do use G-Codes and wouldn't do without it. :) Although sometimes I do extend the end time as some programs do go over the stated time.

Cannot split editing with your Sony? Thats crap. I would think the newer models would have this feature. The Transonic has it.

I have said it before and I will say it again: buy a DVD Recorder from a shop that will give you a refund or at least an exchange / credit. There are many features to consider, too many for most sales people to know and it takes too long to find out from a user manual while in the shop.

Maybe someone can read this entire thread and pick out all features that a person may want to consider. It could be a 'check list' to use when choosing a DVD recorder.

511847 2007-10-03 20:31:00 I have a new Sony RDR-HX750 dvd hard drive recorder . Its fantastic, bloody marvelous in fact because it can skip adverts . :D Now believe me I get great satisfaction when an advert comes because with a quick press of a button on the remote, the advert is completely skipped .

You can also fast forward in steps of between 30 secs, 1 minute, 2m, 3m, etc etc up to 2 hrs and longer . The skip advert trick works by evaluating changes in the actual program sound and video . Take something like Campbell Live or any news program, just before the advert there is an graphic and music of that particular program, and it comes on again just after the adverts and when the program starts again . Most programs have these graphics and music . The Sony DVD-R detects all this so the advert can be passed over . OK, its not perfect but usually I can get it with one press of the button, sometimes 2 or 3 presses, it seems to depend on those graphics and music that delineate start and end of the adverts . I read somewhere that Sony claims it can skip adverts 80% of the time and I agree or its even higher than that .

Transferring video tapes to the HD and then making DVDs is simple . Quality is excellent . On all recordings, DVD or HD, you can set the quality resolution . The default is SP or Standard Play, but 1 or 2 steps down makes little difference and most people would not notice 3 steps worse (longer play) beyond SP . Higher quality settings must be for high definition tv but I don't have that yet . The HX750 is high definition capable . The HX 950 is the same recorder but with a larger hard drive, I think it is 250 Gb instead of 160 gigs . The HX 750 does not have G Code which is strange because earlier Sony models had it but I find most programs that I record are weekly or daily so it means I only have to set the timer once and besides the timer is user friendly and quick to set up so not having g code is not a problem .

Getting rid of the VHS tapes, not having to hunt through tapes fast forwarding-rewinding, that was such a big pain in the *** . Would you go back to using floppies :yuck: or tape drives? Having a dvd recorder is a leap into the 21st century . I can replay bits of the world cup rugby, pause live tv, slow motion, whatever . All in all watching tv takes on a new level now, like watching movies with no adverts . Highly recommend this dvd recorder .

My philosophy exactly!

Great for CD's and DVD's...and maybe a cheap pair of gumboots.

But for anything over $50 with moving parts or requiring a connection to the National Grid.....no way.

How do you tsf video tapes to the HD?

Don't know about commercial tapes but probably not as they have an inaudible signal that prevents copying.

The tapes I have copied are holiday videos that I have shot and some VHS tapes from TV made on the old video recorder but that was only during the first days of owning the new dvd-r.

allblack, yes I have read how good they were but did not expect how much it has changed our viewing. there are programs we get now that would have been out of the question due to lack of tape space and now we can select which portion we want or don't want to watch, not possible, not practicable, with VHS recorders.
