| 511812 | 2007-04-19 11:39:00 | Steve_L : Maybe in the interests of working efficiently at the best suited task - Perhaps Mrs Steve should select the entertainment electronics and you handle the driving. With the money saved you could build an extra room on the house as a DIY project and we could find out who is the better builder, architect, painter etc. Winter's coming, we need plenty of good posts. :D | R2x1 (4628) | ||

Has USB/DV/AV and S-Video inputs It's in very good condition, only about 4 months old, comes with remote control only. Nothing said if it works. |

| 511817 | 2007-04-21 03:45:00 | Hi , Can anyone tell me if the Transonic DVD HDD recorders can record in the NTSC system ? tnx Steve I set it up last Saturday evening & then the kids took over & played their Dvd's. Sunday Morning we went away on holiday & got back today so haven't had a chance to play with it yet :-( Just had a quick look through the manual & see that you can change the TV type to NTSC or PAL (default) so guess it can record NTSC signal if you can find one Cheers Steve |

| 511818 | 2007-04-21 05:21:00 | Hi Guys, I asked the salesperson when I purchased by Phillips DVDR3455H if it had a digital TV Tuner so I could record freeview satelite the sales person said yes but I got the feeling they didnt know what they were talking about. Now that I've got it home on the inputs on the back there is the usual antenna in, svideo and RCA video inputs, no LNB connector. The manual does show how to connect from a cable box or satelite receiver via rca or the normal RF inputs but thats it.. So it looks like I will need a set-top-box if I keep this Phillips DVDR3455H. My main question is if I get a set-top box can I watch one channel and recorder another at the same time? or is it like sky and you can only watch the one channel? Or should I take this back and get a different model? if so which dvd recorder actually has its own digital tuner? |

I don't believe that there are any DVD recorders for sale in New Zealand that do, and if there are, it would be for digital terrestrial, not digital satellite. So it looks like I will need a set-top-box if I keep this Phillips DVDR3455H. My main question is if I get a set-top box can I watch one channel and recorder another at the same time? or is it like sky and you can only watch the one channel? Or should I take this back and get a different model? if so which dvd recorder actually has its own digital tuner?I'm pretty sure that most, if not all, set-top boxes that don't have PVR functionality only have a single tuner, so therefore you would only be able to watch the channel being outputted to your DVD recorder. Personally I think it would be a huge hassle having to use an STB with a DVD recorder (ie. having to leave it on the station you want to record when you go out, not being able to record multiple stations without someone changing the channel etc), but if you actually need the DVD recording functionality (ie. you aren't just going to be storing your videos on the hard drive) then it will be a while before there are DVD recorders with digital tuners available in them in New Zealand and compatible with our broadcasting system (you would have to wait until sometime next year when they role out digital terrestrial - probably the best way to keep up-to-date with what will probably be available is to keep checking the French websites of Sony/Panasonic/Pioneer etc as I think that French digital terrestrial is also going to be H.264 rather than MPEG2 like UK Freeview is). |

| 511820 | 2007-04-23 00:15:00 | The situation in NZ seems confused but it is interesting to note that the USA has mandated that all new televisions and interface devises (inc DVD Recorders) must contain an ATSC tuner alowing reception of broadcast HD digital television. The USA will also terminante all analog TV broadcasting by 2009. This is only two years away. I would not expect any NZ devices to incorporate digital tuners until the situation here is more settled. However we are a small market and currently receive NZ/AUS models so may be influenced by what happens over the ditch. It is likely to happend within the service life of any new Recorder you buy now however. On the one hand the move to digital TV will be a major technology change. On the other hand technology is always chaning and you have to by at some time. There will of course be set top box's for digital reception. | Njb (11630) | ||
