724436 2008-11-30 23:23:00 I am attempting to get an older Toshiba Satellite Pro 4300 series going, it is running MS Win 2000 SP4 and has 196,016 kb ram.

Whenever I put a CD in the drive I get the following message
"Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 CD"
"Warning, the title bitmap has 8 bits per pixel, it must be changed to 4 bits (16 colors)"

Dont know if it matters but it is acutally running IE 6, with a service pack update.

Except for this the computer runs fine.

In device manager/system/other devices - video controller (VGA compatible), has a red cross through it. The adapter is simply listed as VGA, with no brand name.

Any help please ?

724437 2008-11-30 23:32:00 Try reinstalling or installing the Graphic Drivers.

Just looked and there is a letter missing in your description of the Pro series, under Product series - go here (eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com) work through the boxes and download the graphic drivers and install.

Okay, you are running IE6 and have put an older version in the CD and it has stated you need to fix your display setting, which will be okay after you get the graphic driver sorted from WT post...however, DO NOT try to install IE4...!!

Well guys, uninstalled it. Slipped the win 2000 setup disk in (after restart),and watched it serching for "Video controller, VGA compatible", but was told it could not find a driver for this device.

The red cross is now gone, but replaced by a yellow exclamation mark and the message drivers are not installed. Tried it all over again, but got the same result. But we are getting there.

Wainuitech - I see where the letter is missing, but I cannot find any reference to identify whether it is an A,L,M,P,S, or U. I dont have a handbook for it and I can find nothing within the computer that tells me.

What now?

724441 2008-12-01 00:06:00 Go to the toshiba site, search for the model find the driver, install it Speedy Gonzales (78)
724442 2008-12-01 02:43:00 According to a Google Search results the laptop uses S3 Graphics. - BUT I cant confirm this as positive.

The driver you want is P344vid2 according to several sites thats the one for the 4300 series.

You can get it from Driverguide, free to join - if you have no luck just yell and I'm sure someone can get it for you - I do have a log in - but work calls at the moment.

Hey, thanks for the detailed reply. No matter what I tried worked. I think it was all due to the missing serial letter that you mentioned (A,L,M,P,S and U) I tried them all but no joy.

However XP fixed it!
