725350 2008-12-03 03:26:00 I am going to buy a graphics card soon, and the 9600GT range from asus seems like the kind of thing I'm after. However I'm not sure if I should get the basic 9600GT, or spend an extra 40-odd dollars and get the black pearl version with fancy cooler and OC'd GPU. sammo450 (13626)

That thing looks badass.

725353 2008-12-04 00:05:00 i've got the silent vanilla 9600gt from asus and no heat or lag issues playing games like COD:waw

If i were you i'd put the $40 in terms of a percentage of the price of the vanilla card and see if it justifes the percentage performance increases, and see how close that price comes to the 9800

asus cards usually come with/have available overclock utilities anyway to carry them up to a 10% O/C which worked fine for years on my old 6600gt

725354 2008-12-05 01:15:00 OK what do you mean by vanilla? and the other 9600GT I was looking at was the silent one with a v-tec cooler or something like that. The black pearl is OC'd and has '10 degree cooler' fansink. I wouldn't think a clock boost of 50Mhz would do much would it? sammo450 (13626)

That Black pearl doesnt cover the memory or the power modules.......the std 650 clock got 11000 points in 3dmark06, @ 800 cor clock 13000 on my system....

a vanilla doesnt have the GT core or memory speeds....

not sure what a 10 degree cooler is?, however $50 buck says it doesnt cool anywhere near as well as the Calibre.....If only they would use that cooler on a 260\216 core....ummmm

725356 2008-12-05 02:17:00 by vanilla i mean just the "normal" plain card, in this case a 9600GT, without all the fancy overclocks or special coolers motorbyclist (188)

Hmm I think the vanilla(thanks motorbcyclist) has got a GT, I assume that by 'memory speeds' you mean it hasn't got the awesome speeds of the black pearl? You think 650 is pretty sufficient? The cooler just reportedly takes the GPU temp down 10 degrees below what the standard 'Glaciator' fansink does. If I get enough money this payday I'll probably get the black pearl. Might as well I guess.....

'Struth, I think I am in a parallel universe when it comes to graphics cards, with my 7300GS, which seems great, and no fan either.

Was the chap doing the commentary on the 9600 using a speeded up foreign language of some sort, or maybe there is something wrong with my computer? Or my graphics card?

Duude I like that cooler. Where did you get the card and how much did it cost?

And no he was pretty understandable to me...
