725058 2008-12-02 09:53:00 Ok, so I know this is my first post - but I looked around and thought this should be a good place to ask since we're in New Zealand so maybe they're others who would know about this shop/price/things I should look into .

I'm trying to buy a new 'custom built' computer - I've had mine for 4 years - slowly buying different softwares, demos, working on assignments and playing games and its just not working the way its supposed to .

I basically use Maya, Photoshop, a very old version of After Effects (time to buy an upgrade lol) and a few demos - thinking of getting Zbrush - so basically my computer *has* to be extremely fast .

I'm in a rush cus Tomb Raider is coming out in a few days - I know - that's really lame but hey, I really love Lara lol and I want to introduce her to her new home .

I've finally found a good computer shop and told them what I wanted .

They've come back with two options - I basically wanted something with DDR3 (cus someone told me its better) but they said that might be too expensive, so I've got these two options .

Option 1:

1 . CPUIT7920 Intel Core i7 CPU i7-920 2 . 66GHz 8M LGA1366 Retail box cpu . it must go together with X58 chipset motherbaord & DDR3 RAM - $589 . 00

2 . MBDINT5801 Intel BLKDX58SO X58 ATX DDR3 LGA1366 QPI 3xPCIex x16 GIGA LAN RAID FOR i7 MOTHERBOARD - $529 . 00

3 . MEMCOR0010 Corsair TR3X6G1333C9 6GB (3 x XMS3 2GB) PC-10600 (1333MHz) XMP DDR3 32x240 pin DIMM - $539 . 00

4 . VGAGBV0099 GIGABYTE NX96T1GHP 9600GT 1GB PCI-E 2 . 0 x16GDDR3 SLI with HDMI adapter - $259 . 00

5 . HDDSE1505 Seagate Barracuda 11 3 . 5 500GB SATA 7200RPM 32MB Cache - $119 . 00

6 . CHATHM12446 Thermaltake MATRIX ATX/SECC BLACK Middle Tower w/430W PSU - $129 . 00

7 . DVWLGH201 LG GH-20LS 20X Internal SATA DVD Rewriter, Black Color with extral IVORY Bezel (SecureDisc , LightScribe) retail pack with software - $49 . 00

8 . PSUCOR0620 Corsair 620W HX Series Modular PSU double ball-bearing 120mm fan - $169 . 00

9 . SETUP PC SETUP FEE 1 30 . 00 30 . 00

This is total $2700 NZ - which is the more expensive one - I sorta can afford it and looking at this ONLY if this is worth it .

Option 2:

1 . MBDGBM0135 GIGABYTE EP45-DS3L LGA775 FSB 1600MHz DDR2 1200 PCI-E 2 . 0 - $205 . 00

2 . CPUITQ6600 Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2 . 4G 8Mb FSB1066 , G0 Stepping ( SLACR ) - $335 . 00

3 . This I'm presuming is the RAM - and theres 4 of these

MEMHYN22024 HYNIX 2GB DDR2 800Mhz PC6400 SDRAM w/LIFE TIME WARRANTY - quantity 4 55 . 00 $220 . 00

4 . VGAGBV0099 GIGABYTE NX96T1GHP 9600GT 1GB PCI-E 2 . 0 x16GDDR3 SLI with HDMI adapter - $259 . 00

5 . HDDSE1505 Seagate Barracuda 11 3 . 5 500GB SATA 7200RPM 32MB Cache - $119 . 00

6 . CHATHM12446 Thermaltake MATRIX ATX/SECC BLACK Middle Tower w/430W PSU - $129 . 00

7 . DVWLGH201 LG GH-20LS 20X Internal SATA DVD Rewriter, Black Color with extral IVORY Bezel (SecureDisc , LightScribe) retail pack with software - $49 . 00

8 . PSUCOR0620 Corsair 620W HX Series Modular PSU double ball-bearing 120mm fan - $169 . 00

9 . SETUP PC SETUP FEE 1 30 . 00 30 . 00

Total: $1700 NZ .

So, now I don't know which ones to buy - I have NO idea what these are - and because I was an idiot and talked like I knew about these things, I can't even ask him .

Which one do you guys think is better . Here's the website of the shop: http://www . pbtech . co . nz/

725059 2008-12-02 09:56:00 Lol, I voted last - cus I am. bumm (14372)
725060 2008-12-02 10:05:00 if money is not an object then go ahead with the first option:D. however the second option is more than adequate, good enough to play everything out there currently. GameJunkie (72)
725061 2008-12-02 10:24:00 DDR3 really shouldn't be on your list if you are on a budget - nor should Core i7. Your best bet is now the Q6600 and maybe some 1066 DDR2 with a 64bit OS. I don't know what graphics cards should be used for your photoshopping, but from what I know it is more CPU dependant (someone correct me if I'm wrong), so a quad core will definitely be a plus.

Although you might want to replace the 9600GT with a 4850 512MB. The 9600GT should be able to handle any games today on at least medium settings, while the 4850 high to max settings.

Oh, and dump those cases with PSUs bundled - I wouldn't let a 430W Thermaltake run those sorts of machines. Grab at least a good branded 500W PSU. Antec, Enermax, Corsair, Silverstone, AcBel....take your pick. (Sol, here's another chance lol!!)

725062 2008-12-02 17:44:00 Just remember on the first machine you will need a 64bit operating system to be able to use all that RAM and second what gazwsxokmijn says gary67 (56)
725063 2008-12-03 02:55:00 Or if money is not a problem just configure something decent from here:-

725064 2008-12-03 08:48:00 Replace your graphics card with almost anything. You could probably afford to get a 4870x2 and the second setup.

You don't need i7 or DDR3.

Get good RAM. Not hynix, go with Kingston or Corsair or someone like that. You'll probably only need 4GB, so go with 2x2GB 800Mhz sticks.

725065 2008-12-04 00:20:00 what the hell?!

ALL that money and processing power and only a 9600gt?!

i mean, they'll run most games quite well (i have one) but if you're going to spend that much you may as well do it properly and get the latest flavour of 9800... and maybe two of them at that! (or ati if you swing that way ;))

and while ddr3 will put off an upgrade for a further 6 months, it might not be worth it.
whatever it is use corsair or kingston or something reputable as per option 1

get a decent PSU like the one in option1

check www.pricespy.co.nz to see how badly you're being ripped off (if at all), but remember service and honoured warranties are rarely offered by the cheapest shops

so yeah... get option one with a better video card and you'll clean up

725066 2008-12-04 01:11:00 Umm, i vote option 1 if you can afford it, but with the gtx260\216.... SolMiester (139)
