| 725058 | 2008-12-02 09:53:00 | Ok, so I know this is my first post - but I looked around and thought this should be a good place to ask since we're in New Zealand so maybe they're others who would know about this shop/price/things I should look into . I'm trying to buy a new 'custom built' computer - I've had mine for 4 years - slowly buying different softwares, demos, working on assignments and playing games and its just not working the way its supposed to . I basically use Maya, Photoshop, a very old version of After Effects (time to buy an upgrade lol) and a few demos - thinking of getting Zbrush - so basically my computer *has* to be extremely fast . I'm in a rush cus Tomb Raider is coming out in a few days - I know - that's really lame but hey, I really love Lara lol and I want to introduce her to her new home . I've finally found a good computer shop and told them what I wanted . They've come back with two options - I basically wanted something with DDR3 (cus someone told me its better) but they said that might be too expensive, so I've got these two options . Option 1: 1 . | 725061 | 2008-12-02 10:24:00 | DDR3 really shouldn't be on your list if you are on a budget - nor should Core i7. Your best bet is now the Q6600 and maybe some 1066 DDR2 with a 64bit OS. I don't know what graphics cards should be used for your photoshopping, but from what I know it is more CPU dependant (someone correct me if I'm wrong), so a quad core will definitely be a plus. Although you might want to replace the 9600GT with a 4850 512MB. The 9600GT should be able to handle any games today on at least medium settings, while the 4850 high to max settings. Oh, and dump those cases with PSUs bundled - I wouldn't let a 430W Thermaltake run those sorts of machines. Grab at least a good branded 500W PSU. Antec, Enermax, Corsair, Silverstone, AcBel....take your pick. (Sol, here's another chance lol!!) |

| 725064 | 2008-12-03 08:48:00 | Replace your graphics card with almost anything. You could probably afford to get a 4870x2 and the second setup. You don't need i7 or DDR3. Get good RAM. Not hynix, go with Kingston or Corsair or someone like that. You'll probably only need 4GB, so go with 2x2GB 800Mhz sticks. |

ALL that money and processing power and only a 9600gt?! i mean, they'll run most games quite well (i have one) but if you're going to spend that much you may as well do it properly and get the latest flavour of 9800... and maybe two of them at that! (or ati if you swing that way ;)) and while ddr3 will put off an upgrade for a further 6 months, it might not be worth it. whatever it is use corsair or kingston or something reputable as per option 1 get a decent PSU like the one in option1 check www.pricespy.co.nz to see how badly you're being ripped off (if at all), but remember service and honoured warranties are rarely offered by the cheapest shops so yeah... get option one with a better video card and you'll clean up |
