2007-01-13 07:39:00 | Hey everyone, just managed to break my sunnies, which was a bit of a bugger since they were a pressie and cost $250- ouch! Anyhoo, I figured on not spending anywhere near that much this time (can't anyway- no $! :(), but know nothing about sunglasses. So, anyone know anything about them or have suggestions as to good places to go (in Wellie)? I mean, are you paying for a brand name or get what you pay for? If I buy a pair of Aerials from the petrol station, well, am I gonna go blind? :D Not too fussed about looks (don't want to look like Bono though lol), will be using them mainly for driving. Any (serious) suggestions would be appreciated- cheers!

2007-01-13 08:27:00 | I got seperated from mine recently, realised driving home . Jumped into a petrol station and picked up a new pair, to replace the $40 pair I bought at a Star Mart . They aint pretty, but they do the job . I walked the streets of Wellie last week looking at a shop in Lambton Quay and Willis St just around from Stewart Dawsons, but didn't find anything that did it for me . Not keen on the glass jobbies as I'll break them too easily . I know what I'd like, but don't know what the style is called, or where to buy them! Next time I see a bloke wearing them, I'm gonna ask where he got them from  T

2007-01-13 08:33:00 | Get a cheap pair now and then at the end of summer get a good pair in a sale. Often good brand names such as Ray Ban, Bill Bass etc are available at half price from the optician or sun glass shop at that time. | tutaenui (1724) | |

2007-01-13 10:20:00 | Just bought a pair for $20. The brand is Level One they say they offer 100% uv protection. Ray Bans etc you are just paying for the brand name when a $20 pair well do the same job. Trevor :)

2007-01-13 10:25:00 | Even if you got prescription sunglasses the lenses are no where as expensive as brand names or if you just got tailor made non prescription sunglasses - buy a frame and normal tinted lenses (no prescription). I think the tinted non prescription lenses were around $60 a few yrs back. $160 with prescription. Oakley is the design and the label. If one wanted say prescription Oakleys you cannot have that, they will return you the Oakley lenses they take off and they fit normal lenses on them (prescription tinted). However if you do like the lenses color of Oakley and the mirror finish of them, Oakley can provide prescription in them if you request but its more expensive. I enquired last time and it was like 200-400 for lenses and then the sunglasses off the shelf.

Any (serious) suggestions would be appreciated- cheers! Consumer did a test a whike ago between cheap and exspensive glasses . As long as they meet the standard(don't know it) then a cheap pair will protect you as much as an expensive pair . I buy only quality glasses from the warehouse or 2 dollar shop . Only ever last about two months before I sit on them or lose them |

2007-01-13 11:19:00 | Good idea about waiting for the sales tutaenui, hadn't thought of that- I mean, I even wear my shades in winter as the glare here is so great! :waughh: Figured on grabbing a pair of aerials from the petrol stations, but heard somewhere that cheapies could damage your eyes- sure enough, google them and find that they got their wrist slapped in Oz for not labelling them properly . To give 'em their due though, they've now categorised them and released polarised and drivers ones (difference? No idea! lol) . Figured I should ask around first though- don't want to waste my money either way!
