514871 2007-01-11 08:48:00 Just found Ghost4Linux (sourceforge.net) the other day.
Haven't had a chance to test it yet though.

514874 2007-01-12 05:20:00 Running into a bit of problems. I tried using DriveImage XML to make an image of my windows partition. But I can't... because you can't make an image if you are running an OS from that partition.

The instructions said to use BartPE (www.nu2.nu) to make a win xp bootable cd that you can run DriveImage off.

But I only have OEM version of win xp, which apparantly has some of the required files missing, so won't boot :(

I need something fairly easy to use, and also free.

Anyone got any ideas?

514875 2007-01-12 05:23:00 Ah, it looks like Ghost4Linux might be able to do it, because it has a RAW mode, which means it should be able to do NTFS? mejobloggs (264)
514876 2007-01-12 09:10:00 If you want to backup Windows while it is running, you will need to buy Acronis true image. No free programs can do that. Greven (91)
514877 2007-01-12 09:35:00 I don't need to do it while it's running, I'm just getting rather confused.

I have looked at PartImage and such, but they all say NTFS support is pretty dodgy, so I am a bit lost now.

514878 2007-01-21 01:57:00 mejobloggs,

Drive Image XML WILL create an exact image of the active drive, in other words while the system is running, no problem, it just can't restore to the drive that is running the operating system, which is why you boot to the Bart's cd and run the operating system off that to restore the Windows drive.

You don't want to use raw mode--that images empty space as well. By not using it, you can restore an image to a different size drive--it just has to be large enough for the data, of course.

I use Drive Image XML for my backups--super fast, and restores are easy and fast by booting to the Bart's cd.

I had the same problem you had trying to create the Bart's cd from my OEM windows dvd, but I chose the option to create it from the installed operating system files on my harddrive and that worked ok.

Actually there are several that can, including Drive Image XML.
