514001 2007-01-08 21:25:00 Yes I know this is in chat.
Just been helping somebody set up a computer, nether had one before.
There location(otahanga, paraparaumu) doesn't allow them to have broadband so dial up it is.
Anyway the modem is a V.92 and using that it wouldn't even connect, after numerous phone calls to xtra help desk, I slowly downgraded the modem to a V.30(I think) and we finally get connected at a speed of 14000k(my numbers might not be correct) which appears to be totally unusable(took about 2 minutes to load trademe. I remember when I was on dial up getting
49-52000k speeds although not fast by broadband standards totally usable.
Any comments about dial up speed what is usable?
feel free to ask silly question because it might help. Telecom said they wouldn't be looking at upgrading the exchange for another6-12 months, but I did notice telstra cable is in the area, and woosh is not avaliable

514002 2007-01-08 21:54:00 plod I think you have asnwered your own question. Pretty much anything under 56k for dial up is a joke. 56k itself in this day and age is considered a bit of a joke. Telecom's service is considered an oxymoron. Good luck with getting decent service from them. winmacguy (3367)
514003 2007-01-08 22:22:00 ?

Well ive had a few ISP's and found some worse than others, but most of my probs had to do with the lines, and how many cables it had to come thro in my house before being plugged into the puter.
the worst i had was at 28 .... and that was with xtra, whom im not currently with. but that was going thro a pabax system. so not much help to you. but it was unusable really. unless you were willing to wait minutes. currently the lowest i expect is about 42, most of the time i get about 48+ if lucky 52 or 54.
and that is with slingshot. i have also been with KOL and although there connection speed says good.............20 mins and my pf1 page still hadnt finished loading at peak times.
so yes a lot is who you have, and what cabling it has to go thro, before your house.

514004 2007-01-08 22:25:00 yeah the peoples daughter who lives in same suburb managed to get broadband, but xtra were refunding an amount because of the slow speeds.
funny enough they had a real bad phone line and telecom insisted it was the wiring in the house, but when they changed to telstra the phone became crystal clear using the same wiring in the house

514005 2007-01-09 03:30:00 You should not have to go to V30 to get a connection.
Normally v34 which gives a 33k connection works if the phone line is bad.
To do this you add +MS=V34 into the modem extra settings.
Try v90 first though to force a 56k connection using +MS=V90
If you can get a connection with either of these it will load web sites quite satisfactorily.
For normal web browsing and email dialup works fine.

514006 2007-01-09 04:38:00 We had cross talk in 1996 or what 1997 perhaps. They fixed it. Guy came over after and didn't do a thing when we said after they fixed it my 56k modem from a 42k connection is now down to 9.6k. He said most pple aren't even getting that and we are lucky. Nomad (952)
514007 2007-01-09 07:27:00 I'm currently sitting at Arrowtown, Central Otago on 42kps and live with it - but usually I'm in Invercargill on broadband. It can be frustrating but just avoid sites loaded with graphics and am prepared to walk away from the pc sometimes while something downloads. The phone lines in the area are old so thats the speed we get.

Which brings me to my hobbyhorse - unbundling etc. Many people in NZ only get dial-up, and slow dial-up at that. None of the eager ISPs who slag Telecom off are installing new lines for outside cities or establishing good wireless internet. Nope, if they do either of these it is only in the cities.

From a purely business point of view it makes sense but if the government saw fit to interfere with Telecom, then they should also have done something about ensuring a 21st century internet service nation-wide. In fact our government bought the railway lines back, poured hundreds of millions into Air New Zealand, so why didn't they purchase the Telecom lines and then upgrade them, like with the railways???

The answer of course is that most voters live in cities so the country people can be ignored. Disgusting.

514008 2007-01-09 07:51:00 Winston get used to rural services getting worse with unbundling. Telecom will put its investment money into fighting the other ISP's trying to cherry pick its lucrative big city business markets. tutaenui (1724)

Telecom needs to realise that those who live out in the rural areas are people too, even though there arent as many of them :p

514010 2007-01-09 19:51:00 My Dialup's currently sitting at 50.6kps in Dunedin.

It usually starts at 56 kps & I don't normally check it later (except for threads like this) so I guess this is probably normal for me.

I find it adequate for general surfing, though of course slower than I'd like for downloads.
But as I've never had broadband I don't get frustrated by comparisons.

And as Winston says, sometimes it's best to just wander off & do something else for a while...
