514407 2007-01-11 07:58:00 Oops... I definitely won't be forking out for a 'half-baked' (and slightly chewed) Apple phone :(

And Winmacguy.... me thinks you're a wee bit zealous promoting the wonderous plastic bits from the Big-A... not a reseller I hope :D

PS scuzzee Surferjoe... had to cut out the extra smilies etc

In terms of the iPhone, I'm still waiting to see. I do own a cell phone but I am not an iPaq or iMate or Blackberry user so I don't really have any personal user experience to go on to compare the pros and cons between devices. The only thing I can go on being a Mac user is the familiarity of the OSX GUI and I know what sort of things Apple takes into consideration when they design their stuff.

Also consider that the phone is not due out for another 6 months and that it does appear that there are a number of incomplete features on the phone at this stage. From what I have read the actual shell has been improved on since the easy scratch experience of certain iPod models.

I would however expect the device to sell very well when it does hit the shelves with all its features in operation. When the 1st gen iPod was first released a lot of Mac users thought it was waaay to expensive. It was coined Idiots Price Our Devices and it was expected that no one would buy it. 4 and a bit years and 75,000,000+ units sold and look where we are now.

No, I am not a paid Apple reseller, just a Mac user since 2000 when I switched from Windows 98 to Mac OS9 while studying graphic design and although I still own a PC I haven't "switched back" since. My machine of choice for home would be a G5 iMac running 10.4

514408 2007-01-11 08:14:00 when i saw the tv3 'news' report on it i couldn't help but immediately point out that you can already buy cellphones that are mp3 players, and PDAs like the blackberry that do all that and more..... it isn't very revolutionary/it isn't a new product, and it's overpriced and has the whole memory/battery issue

just like the ipod, it is overpriced and currently worse than the cheaper other mp3 players in every category except marketing. somehow the ipod marketing managed to make ipods fashionable when they're the worst product out there.

wasn't aple sued under anti-trust laws as the ipod isn't a true mp3 player and you have to use itunes and buy from their istore or something? (as opposed to a true mp3 player which will play any mp3 (and often other formats), costs reasonable amounts of money, has replaceable batteries, easy interface, and is more compact)

Yes it does currently appear to be rather highly priced as was the iPod when that first came out. I would expect that to come down within 2-3 years to become very competitive price wise. The telling point will be when the user reviews start coming out in 6 months when it is released. I as I said before I cant coment either way because I have never used a similar device.

With regards to Apple being sued because it controls both the iPod and iTunes, if it only built one part of the service then YES it would be illegal but since it built BOTH it doesn't legally have to open them to competitors unless it wants to which is what is pissing off the competition.
This is called successful vertical integration of a product and associated software. If you want to sue Apple for the iPod and iTunes model then you should also consider suing Microsoft for the Zune and Zune music store and Xbox and software because they are also examples of vertical integration. There are a number of class action lawsuites, Apple did make a number of changes regarding the replaceable battery.

514410 2007-01-11 09:06:00 somehow the ipod marketing managed to make ipods fashionable when they're the worst product out there . Dare I ask how you come to this conclusion? Obviously aesthetics are a personal thing, but the majority of people would agree that Apple designs very nice looking products . Their interfaces are also very easy to use and they have very good integration between product lines . The only way the iPod could be "worse" than competing products is in the specifications department, but other than an FM radio and voice recorder (both of which can be added via optional accessories) there is very little other some alternative products have that the iPod doesn't .

Anyway, the iPod has been defended :p , I have to say the iPhone seems like a great product . The phone functionality isn't really revolutionary, though it does improve on existing products . However, essentially having an iPod and a phone, as well as some excellent internet features is a great combination .

Based on what we have seen so far, there are a few things it seems to be lacking though . First of all, no 3G . Hopefully the model for other markets will be 3G, as the current model would be very slow for countries where there is no Edge network (I believe Edge is considered 2 . 5G or 2 . 75G) . The fact it doesn't have a 3MP camera or FM radio, which are a common features in similarly priced phones . And finally, the fact it is only available on contract .

I wouldn't be surprised in the iPod was still the most expensive mp3 player and the one with the lowest specs in its price bracket.Plus welded to a horrible piece of bloatware which serves only to limit its user friendliness.

Anyhow, That aside, Do you even own any Apple gear?, or is it just a try hard fanboy thing you've got going on?

Unfortunately I only have a 3rd Gen iPod and a 5th Gen Video capable iPod of my own and I am currently holding out to replace my home PC with a 20" G5 iMac when finances allow as previously mentioned on other parts of this forum. (had to pay for my wedding 12 months ago and currently putting money together for our first mortgage)

The "fanboy" thing you enquire about Metla is only based on my user experience of starting on Mac OS9 back in 2000 while using Windows 98 at home and directly comparing the two. I guess you could say that I had an open mind at the time of switching and studying since I was learning Photoshop (new software) at the time in a new environment (Mac OS). I had to learn in a hurry since there was a lot crammed in to a 36week course.

Have you checked the prices on any similar spec'd products by the competition?
