514537 2007-01-14 05:09:00 These days the bulk of office types use Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Email, Google, asssorted web based apps that run on Java, IE and Firefox all of which run very happily on a Mac. winmacguy (3367)
514538 2007-01-14 05:12:00 Its because the open platform allows the workplace to buy computers to suit the role they are being used for, Rather then what Apple have decided upon.

The spin of this open platform is of course that Price is low while performance is high, and anyone can easily be trained to service the computers.

yet for some strange reason the market is almost entirely windows.... i wonder why, if the latest mac is so great, this trend isn't changing:rolleyes:

i do actually hope microsoft gets badly burned by this whole Vista debacle, unless they stop encouraging piracy by making the legal products slow, expensive and annoying, i expect vista will be widely pirated (especially with that price tag) and/or be a big break for mac/linux

514540 2007-01-14 05:20:00 Actually I was thinking more of the fact that a lot of today's applications be run on any computer regardless of platfom. Which comes down to the employee being able to choose what they want to work on in the office. If they prefer Windows they can use Windows, If they prefer Mac becasue they own one (or two) they can use a Mac in the work place. Places like IBM and Google have recently added a Macs to their setup since they are an important part in the application testing cycle for web based and Mac based applications. With regards to price, since you can run Parallels on a Core2Duo Mac you don't need 2 machines because you can have XP running next to OS X on 1 machine quite happliy with very limited tech support. winmacguy (3367)

In the long run that is actually hurting the likes of HP and Dell because they no longer have a "bottom line" to play with. None of the big players actually make great profits from selling desktop computers, they make their profits from elsewhere which can be very tough in a competitive market.

514544 2007-01-14 05:57:00 I think you will find that a lot of the big boys will try to integrate better designed features that add value to the PC to allow them to put a greater profit margin on the hardware which will bring your "average" PC up passed? your average Mac? bit ironic don't you think? winmacguy (3367)

Open platform? Don't you mean licensed OS? Linux is the only true "Open platform". Anybody can build 3rd party hardware to fit any computer.

Reading between the lines here: you don't like Macs because you don't know how to service them? By you comments here and elsewhere I sense a lot of insecurity

Before I intriduced Macs into our home I regulary had to spend Sunday nights correcting problems my family encountered/caused on our Windows PCs. Now I spend next to no time at all. I still earn a lot of money fixing PCs for a living. I love Windows instability because it's so profitable
