2007-01-14 02:37:00 | It was a modem. External, serial. I was working at an ISP at the time. OK,it wasn't the latest 2006 model of MAC but neither was it ancient rubbish either. Was it OS9 or OS X because Classic had much more of an issue with PC networks with Apple talk than OS X does. Just to politely point out that it is Mac as opposed to MAC which is an acronym for any 3 words using those 3 letters. You have an interesting perspective there pctek. Woz is and was an electronics genius but he is not the charismatic marketing genius with a vision that Steve Jobs is (controversial guy with an ego the size of the Titanic and the personality of a fish- possibly similar to House MD). Without Woz the first Apple Mother board and basic operating system would never have been developed but without Jobs the concept of a simple to use home computer would not have eventuated till sometime later.

2007-01-14 02:54:00 | They may catch up one day with the PCs good points - which Metla has already explained, but its not there yet. And when it does, it will have become a PC anyway.........Apple figured that out ages ago. Thats why you now can add your own bits - KBs, HDDs, MS operating systems.... Actually I think there might be another couple of reasons for allowing Windows to boot up on a Mac and this is just my opinion; 1 Do it and do it for FREE because sooner or later someone is going to hack it and do it inspite of you. 2 Follow the same route as the iPod for Windows. It's a Trojan horse in plain sight. As you said you can ad your own bits since ages ago - for those concerned with consistency of style and form, Mac bits just look better on Macs for about the same price.

2007-01-14 04:52:00 | It should recognize the device within about 30 seconds. In a worst case senario with the device not showing up as an icon on the desktop may just require a restart of the machine. I have had this happen on a few different machines. The difference between Mac and Windows is that the bulk of the time you don't need to download any additional drivers unless it is some 3rd part device you are going to be using like a scanner, in which case you should have the disk with drivers with you. If you are needing updates then yes you can just download them. If it is just a camera or DV camera or external HD then it should just show up on the desktop. so basically, they both work the exact same way, you plug it in, put in the cd if it came with one, and it works. i think the fact that over 90% of computers globally are windows based is perhaps a sign of something......

2007-01-14 04:59:00 | i think the fact that over 90% of computers globally are windows based it perhaps a sign of something...... Yes it is. People generally tend to use the same computer at home that they are given at work because they don't want to try any other options apart from what they already know. I think the iPhone at the corporate level and lots of Macs being integrated into education (Primary and intermediate level) might start level that playing field a wee bit. One minor difference between a Mac recognizing a device and a PC is that Apple puts it on your desktop so that you don't have to go looking for it. It is just a simple thing but it makes life easier. When you want to disconnect you just drag the icon into the Trash and you can then unplug it safetly.

2007-01-14 05:05:00 | and why are they given it at work? Well to cut a long detailed explanation short, ;) Generally if for no other reason than the fact that most IT types are MCSE qualified and the only thing they know how to use is Windows. Which doesn't mean to say that Windows is the only solution for the work place.
