2007-01-14 00:01:00 | so, when you put a device into a mac it goes immediately? windows does that, just wait a moment for the "installing new hardware" bubble to disappear and it's good, unless it's hardware in which it works fine once you've stuck the cd with driver on it in there, provided windows doesn't already have them. so what's the big fuss? it isn't exactly that hard to find a device neither os has been prepared for, and with the proliferation of windows help is only a google away

2007-01-14 00:28:00 | Well, That aspect of Mac is better, simply because of the closed platform its much simpler to design a product to fit, The specs are fixed and known. When it comes to Windows the differences are near infinite, software, hardware, drivers and user fiddling all make an impact. In this regard I think XP is a miracle that it works as well as it does.

2007-01-14 00:44:00 | Slugs? Not at all, what they have accomplished is something Apple never had the capabilities to do, no what how much the company is loved by its devotees. For MS to produce a product that can tie in all the millions of available items of hardware and software made possible by an open platform is beyond astounding,Look at what a PC can do?, and as much as MS are bastards they have played a huge part in it. XP is by all accounts usable for the layman, solid as a rock, fast, easy to load drivers for (though not as simple as Mac in some cases), and can run millions of items of hardware and software. This is why MS dominate the market, that and they have killed every company that got into bed with them, as well as those that spurned their advances.

Although I prefer your rendition,I think I said that with fewer words. |

2007-01-14 01:16:00 | so, when you put a device into a mac it goes immediately? It should recognize the device within about 30 seconds. In a worst case senario with the device not showing up as an icon on the desktop may just require a restart of the machine. I have had this happen on a few different machines. The difference between Mac and Windows is that the bulk of the time you don't need to download any additional drivers unless it is some 3rd part device you are going to be using like a scanner, in which case you should have the disk with drivers with you. If you are needing updates then yes you can just download them. If it is just a camera or DV camera or external HD then it should just show up on the desktop. The difference between a Mac and a PC for the average non tech minded person is that the Mac is a much simpler package to use which achieves the same result with less clicks of the mouse and less frustration. Bill Gates is a highly intelligent man who can read and write code and see into the future for all the seemless things he thinks we might need, but sometimes highly intelligent people don't have the ability to make things that are simple for to use for us mere mortals which is where Steve Jobs comes into the picture. He can't read or write code but he does have the ability to see how a device or app could be make easier for mere mortals to use.
