My first 3rd Gen 20GB iPod is pretty much dead now, it only works if plugged in. It actually have an average battery which never really lasted the full 8 hours. My newer 5th Gen 30GB Video capable iPod which I got duty free in late August last year holds it charge very well and was comparitively cheaper than my first iPod. If you get an Apple care warranty at time of purchase you should be "insured" for between 1-3 years depending on the warranty.

I have a 4G 40gig iPod (no video), bought two years ago. I only use my iPod in my car these days. It plugs directly into the stereo via a cable that uses Apple's proprietary connector. The iPod charges direct from the car (I only take the ipod out to update it with new songs) so I don't ever have to "charge" it separately. Whenever I take it out, though, it's always fully charged, and seems to last as long as it ever did.

Some people did warn that permanently connecting it to the power could damage the battery. I'm not too fussed, though, because when this one breaks I'll be "allowed" (SWMBO) to upgrade to a video iPod... ;)

515125 2007-01-12 02:32:00 I have had a 20GB 4G iPod with USB for 18 months and the battery life is o.k. I was planning to eventually replace the battery with one of those DIY replacement battery kits... bachelorno1 (6556)

515127 2007-01-12 20:58:00 Any Ipod will charge if u have the charger / cable and a firewire port.

And will also charge via a USB port.

I used to use both till someone stole the charger, with the cable thats got the firewire connection on it.

And yup same as Winmacguy, the first Ipod was dearer than my 60 GB video Ipod.

I've had the old 40 GB since 2003/04. And the Video Ipod since last year I think from DSE.

Both so far recharge fully.

Snce I have 2 USB cables, I can charge both at the same time, or connect one thru the docking whatever it's called, which is connected permanently to one of the back USB ports.
