| 726248 | 2008-12-07 21:30:00 | The web shield deals with sites you go to / with whatever browser. Thats why its called web shield. I found that this can slow you down. So, I killed it and Script blocking (if you have Pro) If you dont use P2P, IM programs. Outlook terminate them. |

| 726249 | 2008-12-08 02:10:00 | Hi Guys I am thinking of getting Avast Anti Virus (free) I have a few questions for any avast users 1 Is it reliable, 2 Is getting updates reliable 3 does it clash with say firewalls ZoneAlarm, 4 how good is its user interface. 5 Does it consume much system resources 6 How customisable is it - can you set it to not scan certain folders ? etc 7 Do the developers fix bugs quickly. 8 Does it pick up many viruses ? Are there any other faults or downsides that you can think of ? 1) Yes 2) Yes - Automatic updates every day 3) No - I use both 4) I find it easy to use, interface looks like an audio player with start/pause buttons 5) adding up all the service processes I have running it comes to around 70mb of RAM used on an XP system. I also run it on a MUCH slower win 2000 system and it's fine on there, scans are a bit slower though. 6) You can tell it can tell it to scan selected folders, so you can select all but the ones you don't want scanned, not sure if you can do it the other way around. I normally just right click -> scan folder or run a full system scan 7) Not sure, I've never really had any bugs, I've had 2 false positives in 3-4 years with avast, not sure if they're fixed. 8) It's found 2 false positives and 2 viruses in 3-4 years with it, 1 false positive was while installing a programme, 1 fasle positive was while booting up a programme (keypress.dll in TS2, I used repair, everything works), 1 Virus/worm/trojan was detected while downloading a file, download deleted and virus removed, and the other was detected in my browsers cache/temp folder after I got redirected to an infected site. I had a friend who was using norton on his PC, and he had a virus he couldn't get rid of, he installed avast free, it found the virus and he's used it ever since. It also scans memory and startup [EDIT] For the 70mb being used, I have every module except "outlook protection" enabled. Webshield is the most intensive module, it's using 46mb. |

| 726250 | 2008-12-08 11:29:00 | 1 Have found it to be very reliable installed on two of my own machines and multiple PC's belonging to friends 2 Never had a problem getting updates - looks after itself like that 3 plays nice with ZoneAlarm, havent tried with other products 4 I find the user interface a bit odd and sometimes counter-intuitive, not as straight forward as it could be, but it's not too bad overall, and you wont need to use it much. 5 Does not consume as much system resources as ither AV products, in particular it is far far better than Nortons in this regard 6 Very customisable if you want to 7 Never experienced a bug 8 Have not seen it pick up a virus on my own PC, but have used it to clean out some friends PC's a couple of which were a hell of a mess. Have seen it tackle over a hundred on one badly infested machine I encountered Regards Peter J |

| 726252 | 2008-12-09 19:08:00 | Right-click Avast's "a" icon in the tasktray and choose Stop Provider or Pause Provider if you want to disable them temporarily . Lots of other options for different things in there as well . |

| 726254 | 2008-12-10 06:45:00 | 1 yes, very 2 yes, very. some up dates are 20 Mb in size, not good on a rural dialup ! 3 no works well with ZA 4 very straight forward 5 no 6 very, yes 7seem to 8 not sure Iv'e never got one yet I changed to avast form avg a month ago after asking a similar question in this forum. I have no regrets what so ever, It's been a dream to configure and use and seems very reliable. |
