726238 2008-12-06 18:29:00 Hi Guys

I am thinking of getting Avast Anti Virus (free)

I have a few questions for any avast users

1 Is it reliable,
2 Is getting updates reliable
3 does it clash with say firewalls ZoneAlarm,
4 how good is its user interface.
5 Does it consume much system resources
6 How customisable is it - can you set it to not scan certain folders ? etc
7 Do the developers fix bugs quickly.
8 Does it pick up many viruses ?

Are there any other faults or downsides that you can think of ?

726241 2008-12-06 22:17:00 I hardly ever use the scan function, I just use Avast! for it on access protection, and it does a pretty good job. Blam (54)

726243 2008-12-07 08:18:00 Just load it and after a couple of years of realising how great a programme it really is, you will opt for the paid or Professional version :) Zippity (58)

726245 2008-12-07 17:31:00 Thanks guys.

Based on that and other research over the years I have decided I will ditch AVG and try Avast !

726246 2008-12-07 18:29:00 The only problems I've struck were last week with the boy's two pc's.First one had trouble booting, would sit there for ages.So I went around and saw a symbol across the avast tray icon.Updated the program and after a couple of reboots it came right. Then he rang up the next day to say that he had the same thing happen to the other pc.Did a program update etc and they're fine again. 726247 2008-12-07 21:25:00 What monitors should be enabled? Currently I just have the standard shield and the Web shield. Is the web one necessary? What does it do that the standard one doesn't? utopian201 (6245)
