Power is relative to the type of airgun - rifle or pistol. Also depends on type of air. It can be by small gas bottles, spring actuated or in the case of a rifle, you break the barrel to compress the air into a holding chamber. To go into wood you would probably need a rifle. Airguns do not need to be locked away. |

| 517464 | 2007-01-19 01:30:00 | Bizarre that AIRguns are covered under FIREARMs regulations. To my knowledge, there is no combustion involved when squeezing a trigger of an airgun... | johcar (6283) | ||

| 517468 | 2007-01-19 04:28:00 | i am thinking of getting an air gun,but don't know the laws for them ,if there are any . how old do u have to be to buy an air gun in nz? And the pellets it shoots, how strong are they? can they go through wood?how loud is the sound when you fire an air gun? do u have to have a locked safe in your house to store the air gun? If you don't know the laws for airguns then I would suggest that you go and find out, either from a gun shop or preferably your local police station . This page ( . police . govt . nz/service/firearms/" target="_blank">www . police . govt . nz) has information regarding firearms as well a link to download a copy of the Arms Code . Like Plod says, the pellets are dangerous enough to take out someone's eye, something which did happen recently . I have not heard anything more about the victim and whether he recovered or not but the pellet actually went into his brain . Yes, pellets can go through wood . The sound is not really loud enough to worry about using earplugs but the neighbours will hear it if you are planning to use it in your backyard . Speaking of which, it is an offence to "discharge it in or near a dwelling house or public place so as to endanger property or to endarger, annoy or frighten any person" . |
