| 517016 | 2007-01-17 22:57:00 | I have managed to put ALL my thousands of old film photographs on the computer each with a caption (I use ACDSee v 3.5 later versions are rubbish). I also have scanned many documents and although I haven't yet managed to get rid of all paperwork I have made some difference. Then yesterday I heard of an office where the lady in charge insists that all emails are printed out and filed. The mind boggles. But I thought regulars to PC World Chat might be amused. Tom |

I can't believe someone (especially a Mac fan!!!) would prefer to print off emails than read them on screen!!! :waughh: Personally, I rarely print anything (partly because I primarily use a laptop which has only a PDF print driver installed and no permanent connection to a physical printer. I find it far easier to read on-screen (and kill electrons when I have finished with a document) than spend my 'hard-earned' on reams of paper which I would then have to either file or bin. Just a point: what would be the difference between reading an email on-screen and perusing this forum?? I assume you don't print off forum postings to read??? :) Tom - I hope after all your hard work you have your photos on good media and securely backed up!! :D |

If I am copy pasting text from the email to the job in question then I will do that on screen, however it can also be easy to have the printed email on the desk beside me while checking changes on screen. Each person's preference I guess. Also depends how much stuff I have open on screen at any one time. Replying to these posts is slightly different, it is interactive web use. |

Accounts are kept on the PC, the main P&L is printed off each year and of course invoices, bills etc are kept for IRD but I don't have bank statements anymore, and everything possible is done via the PC without the printer. However. It amazes me the amount of people that keep photos on their PCs or CD. Think about this: Once we used tapes. Then we used 5.25" floppies. Then 3.5: floppies. Show me how you would view or access the tape or 5.25" floppies now? So in 10 years? 5 Years? What are you going to view them with? Not to mention detriorating media, failing HDDs etc etc. Whereas 100 year old printed photos can still be looked at or redone at a photo shop. I have a few on the PC but none I care if they get lost. All photos I want to be around 20 years from now, have been printed - and by a photolab too, not my little inkjet. |

I have done this with home movies that were on tape and are now on dvd and a hdd backup. Over the years at work we have seen a down turn in printed forms. whatever they might be. More recently in the past 3 years we have seen a slight increase in the amount of forms printed. It seems going to a paperless office in the 90's was a big trend for the corporates, but this seems to have changed and a lot of this is double handling |

I only print a few emails but all documents. There is a lovely piece of writing somewhere which describes the advantages of paper over electronics. Portable, no electricity, light-weight, foldable, can be written on, taken into the next room to show somebody etc etc. |

| 517023 | 2007-01-18 03:55:00 | I after 1 yr of storing my printer connected it up yesterday and printed 2 items......... probably wont use it again for a long time.:illogical But in regaurds the photo idea, of printing them....... i have about 10 thousand photos........that i would call precious memories items.... and probably another couple that are if lost no probs. There fore i couldnt possibly print every individual item i would hate to lose, everything except the most recent stuff is backed on dvd now tho....... bBut the cost and the where to store 10 thousand photos....... astounds me... the mind just boggles... there is probably no way to store things in that perfect device that will not warp, rip tear, mould, or get magnetised or crack over time ...is there? beetle:confused: |
