516639 2007-01-17 00:14:00 I currently have built in sound. AC 97 (or simliar)

I want a better sound card. It will only be used for voice. Head phones and microphone. No music or anything else.

Would someone like to suggest a good card for this?

516640 2007-01-17 01:44:00 Why do you want a "better" sound system, Jack?

I can't imagine that AC97 can't handle the requirements for voice telephony. 300 - 3200 Hz at 8 or 10 bit resolution is all that's needed, surely.

Just trying to improve clarity. Getting some distortion.

516642 2007-01-17 03:15:00 It's far more likely to be the mic, the compression codec, or your internet connection causing the problem than your soundcard. Erayd (23)
516643 2007-01-17 05:28:00 A friend of mine recommended I buy a USB mic. Does a 3.5mm socket generate enough noise for a USB connection to make much difference?

I haven't missed my old mic since it broke, so I don't think I'll bother buying a new one.

You are getting too technical for me.
I bought a logitech head set, plugged it in, adjusted the settings to mike in control panel. Speakers are unplugged.

What else should I do?
