518246 2007-01-22 04:45:00 I'm in the market for a digital still camera, and looking for recommendations. My options are pretty wide open, so I'm keen to hear about whatever you think is good, and why. My upper limit in terms of price $600, but if I'm going to spend that kind of money it's got to be a pretty good camera. It won't be used for professional photgraphy, but I enjoy taking photos (rather than just snaps) so a few nifty features would be good. However, it'll also have to serve as the snapshot camera, so nothing overly complicated from the get-go.

Now - having set the impossible task - I sit back and look forward to the suggestions. :D

518249 2007-01-22 05:02:00 I like canon, but look for one that is made in Japan, rather than china, as the japanese ones are higher quality, and this goes across all brands. Sony point and shoots are also quite nice. rogerp (6864)
518250 2007-01-22 05:11:00 Canon Powershot S3IS it only just exceeds your price range, but IMO its a very good camera, its video rivals that of dedicated camcorders, 15-60fps. 6.0mp. 12x optical zoom. uses usb and SD card for storage. Chrisn (9819)

518254 2007-01-22 06:36:00 Hi Lizard, you'll find plenty of threads here on cameras and you've probably noticed them eg . . pcworld . co . nz/showthread . php?t=75972" target="_blank">forums . pcworld . co . nz

Frankly it is both a tough and an easy call . Modern digital cameras $400 - $700 simply take excellent photos . The market is so competitive that you really would be unlucky to buy a pig .

So IMHO opinion you should look for a viewfinder (much better than relying on the lcd screen) and at least 2 1/2 inch screen .

The Canon A640 looks like a good camera .

However I use an Ixus 55 for its portability and it is simply wonderful .
