727061 2008-12-10 23:24:00 Also, the river plan isn't ADSL2 (the exchange/Dslam)

Even if you've got an ADSL2+ modem, you wont get ADSL2+ speeds

You would have to change plans to get ADSL2+ speeds

But you should still get above 2000 (altho as PCtek said, this depends on WHERE you are). And where your nearest exchange is

727062 2008-12-10 23:47:00 Yeah the nzdsl is the same as testmyspeed.co.nz (expired), they all use the same Ookla Metrics one ... I wanna write my own some time soon, and have it test the speeds vs a couple of different servers in your area ... Chilling_Silence (9)
727063 2008-12-11 05:44:00 Sorry I didn't get back last night, being with Xnet, I went offline and played games. We aren't far from exchange, but are in a small country town Rangiora. Our router is about a year old, and yes, we have wireless as well, but this computer does NOT run off that.

They were doing a heap of work in that green box thing last year, but havent' seen them in it this year.

I used to get close on 3000kb/s with xnet, sure can't get anywhere near it now, not even first thing in the morning.

727064 2008-12-11 05:51:00 Do Xnet wholesale off Telecom? Or do they have their own equipment in some places?

Ive really come to despise the ISP's wholesaling off Telecom, the speeds on those ISPs seem much worse than those who have their own equipment at the exchange. Maybe Im just biased now that we switched to Orcon at work :p

727065 2008-12-11 07:48:00 Hey Bussani,

No need to stay up to monitor your downloads.
If you are using a Bit Torrent program (uTorrent for example). Open the scheduler options/preferences/scheduler. You can set the time downloads/uploads can start/finish.

If you want to download directly from a website use a totally free program like
'Free Download Manager'
downloads.sourceforge.net

You can set the time downloads/uploads can start/finish with this too.

Hey, thanks for replying. Those are the two programs I decided to use if I ever do get a plan with free hours, they sound perfect. :D

Exactly what I use-an excellent use for my old P4 machine

727068 2008-12-12 06:54:00 Well, I'm trying out Free Download Manager now, and it really seems to increase my speeds and stability from Megaupload.

Are there any downsides I should know about? Does it use up more of my monthly bandwidth or anything?
Bussani (14313)
727069 2008-12-12 07:44:00 Sorry, I was asking if it uses up more of my monthly internet allowance if that wasn't clear. Bussani (14313)
727070 2008-12-12 09:34:00 Even better. If you can get your hands on an older, cheaper laptop. They make great torrent/download machines as they are really quiet. supersi (8401)
