727051 2008-12-10 05:06:00 Ok, I am on the river scheme through Xnet. How come you guys get over 2000 kbit/s when I can't even make 1000? What sort of things should I be doing.

I have already rebooted the router when i come home, as I thought it might of been me that had disconnected, and found that once again Xnet was down.

727052 2008-12-10 05:11:00 It'll probably be worse, now thats its past 6 pm

Before 6 mine was about 4000, now its 3600-3705 download

And will probably get slower later tonight

727053 2008-12-10 05:17:00 Are you using wireless?
What area are you in, that can affect your speed.

727054 2008-12-10 06:01:00 Results from http://www . speed . io
(Copied on 2008-12-10 16:35:33)
Download: 1866 Kbit/s
Upload : 128 kbit/s
Connects : 375 conn/min
Ping: 145 ms

Yet I still get 5m/bit+ when downloading from the US? Oh well . . .

My Xtra connection is the opposite .

I get results like this, but my downloads from Megaupload and other places have been terrible lately, bouncing between 200KB/s and under 100KB/s .

727055 2008-12-10 08:39:00 Having a premium (paid) account with MegaUpload *definitely* helps with the speed. That said, I get better speeds with Usenet.

Part of the problem for many is also their router cannot reliably handle downloading at X speeds, usually because it involves things like multi-threading a download, and too many open connections, routers memory fills up, it crashes or speeds crawl, dns may fail ... seen it all too many times with el-cheapo conexant routers, d-link, dynalink even.. heck, my router could do with replacing to be honest :(

727056 2008-12-10 10:39:00 I have a premium account with Megaupload myself, but I haven't been getting the good speeds like I used to lately, not on my old d-link or new Linksys modem/router either. It's about the same on either of my lines and computers too, so it could just be xtra or megaupload itself.

Edit: Their speeds seem better/more stable in the evening or at night, so yeah. But even though the speed fluctuates, the downloads still go at an average of about 1.5 MB every 10 seconds. Not blistering, but I shouldn't complain.

Lots of things affect speed.
How far you are from the exchange.
How old the equipment at the exchange is.
Whether your modem is ADSL2+ or not (if your exchange is now aadsl2+ that is)
What traffic is like - Xnet being known lately for terrible speeds in the evening/night.

I get reasonable here at the shop but at home is a lot less. Old equipment in my case........
