518972 2007-01-25 04:06:00 The article was interesting, because it showed that just because this woman had money, that she expected that she should be treated differently to the rest of the population for services.

Obvioulsy Vodafone and Woosh think this too, otherwise they wouldn't have rushed around to her house. They wouldn't do this for a normal wage earner.

Hmm.. i think its got to do with the wealth of the street rather than the wealth of one resident.
The case is iconic, if i were in any of the listed companies i would have done the same. It's publicity.

518973 2007-01-25 04:57:00 Funny thing is, places like Otara, Otahuhu, Mangere and Manurewa which would be considered lower class areas can actually get ADSL.

I still can't get Woosh though. Probably wont want it either.

Damn right . Who is rushing over to my friend stuck on dial up in Ngapara? She can't get anything except possibly unaffordable satellite .

It is not strange at all . It is not that broadband is not available if you read the article the reason she can't get connected is that the Remuera exchange - which her phone line is connected to - is full and has no more capacity .
There are several exchanges like this around the country which have people on a waiting list to get connected .

Everyone in Remuera probably wants broadband where as in places like Otara the demand may not be so great .

518976 2007-01-25 06:42:00 Labour sold telecom to a private company, so any taxes we paid to setup the infrastructure, have also been sold. That is what happens when you sell something, you can't then get it back for free. Maybe the government should buy back telecom, and invest back into the country, instead of the cullen fund investing offshore.

Telecom has now been unbundled, so we will soon have a choice of providers using the telecom backbone, although this is very unlikely to result in cheaper prices.

Yeah, I'm up with the play bud, I was stating the fact in different words!

& you cant do much more with a network when its already saturated......

That is mostly the Com Coms fault. They required telecom to have a minimum # of new subscribers, otherwise they would force telecom to unbundle the network. Telecom didn't meet the requirements in time , so it was eventuallu unbundled. However the government weren't willing to invest into it at all. The exact same thing is happening in the UK, where people are also waiting months for broadband, due to the huge uptake of broadband. Essentially it is a case of supply not keeping up with demand. The governemtn could fix it by buying telecom back and investing back in hte network.
They have brought back the tracks, and also Air NZ, so why not our telecommunications?

I doubt she would notice, as shoe probably mainly uses it for email and viewing the odd website. I can't see here being a big bit torrent downloader or youtube viewer.
