518962 2007-01-25 01:16:00 Gibbs is worth $30 million, is the former wife of Alan Gibbs who was involved in the privatisation of Telecom and lives on one of the richest streets in New Zealand.

Serves them right.

518963 2007-01-25 01:18:00 This cracks me up!
I setup a network and broadband at a house on Waiheke Island that is about 5-10 mins drive from the main town.
It is in it's own bay with no other houses around (closest would be about 500 metres away up the hill) and they can get about 2Mbps ADSL connection.
So if they can get it there surely Telecom can get it to those people in Paratai Drive!!

518964 2007-01-25 03:22:00 It gets even better:

haha, every other phone company part from Telecom is offering her broadband haha
:D

Funny that Vodafone has got involved, as their coverage for wireless broadband throughout the country is only limited to a few city centres in NZ, and it is more expensive than ADSL. Telecoms wireless broadband is about the same price a vodfones service, and would have worked where that woman lived, as it is far more widespead than vodaphones wireless broadband. I therefore wonder why Telecom didn't sugeest that. I suspect the woman didn't want to pay the extra amount for it if telecom did suggest it, although it wouldn't cost her anymore than $50 per month.

Well, according to the NZ Herald article, the exchanges or boxes around that area and the eastern suburbs have reached maximum capacity but they (Telecom) have just recently installed more exchanges in those areas. So maybe she should have something to look forward to though I suspect that once she experiences the "extraordinary speeds", she'll be hankering to go back to dial-up.

518967 2007-01-25 03:25:00 Exactly my point.......we have no choice but Telecom, they have monopoly, therefore................blah blah blah

Labour sold telecom to a private company, so any taxes we paid to setup the infrastructure, have also been sold. That is what happens when you sell something, you can't then get it back for free. Maybe the government should buy back telecom, and invest back into the country, instead of the cullen fund investing offshore.

Telecom has now been unbundled, so we will soon have a choice of providers using the telecom backbone, although this is very unlikely to result in cheaper prices.

The article was interesting, because it showed that just because this woman had money, that she expected that she should be treated differently to the rest of the population for services .

Obvioulsy Vodafone and Woosh think this too, otherwise they wouldn't have rushed around to her house . They wouldn't do this for a normal wage earner .
