im thinking about getting an LCD TV. had a look at a couple. toshiba 40" (model LA40371BX) and toshiba 37" (model 37WL664). both at $2998. harvey norman has a 3year no interest, no deposit thing going. very tempting.

does anyone know anything about these two models? is one better than the other??

518851 2007-01-24 06:49:00 Nor did I until a bought a Sony 42" LCD about a month ago.

CRT is old hat.....Plasma didn't float my boat and I'm still not sure on the technology, so LCD seemed a happy medium.

I'm no TV expert, but it does what it's meant to do, and does it well.

Bonus is, I can use it as a PC monitor! When I can figure out the settings....

If you can't afford to buy it outright, where you can get a better deal, you probably shouldn't get it (thats me with my sensible hat on). Harvey Normans is often very expensive compared to other stores. Farmers and Noel Lemmings/B&B(same company) often have 20% off Sony and Panasonic, so you may want to wait for a few weeks. Sony Bravia ones look very nice. LCD TV prices are due to drop a lot this year.
Also you want to make sure you get one with HDCP input, as when HD/Blue Ray come in , the only way to watch HD DVDs, will be with a HDCP input.

518853 2007-01-24 09:21:00 CRT is still the better bet if what you're looking for is quality of picture, especially for action and sports. What the newer tech has over CRT is size and power consumption... and the sense of being cool. Murray P (44)

Also it does emit radiation, but I agree with you in terms of colour and motion blur. Plasma are supposed to be better for colour and motion blur, but they don't last as long and can suffer from screen burn(as can CRTs).

LCDs with LED backlights are supposed to have better colours, but are much more expensive. Apple are going to be introducing them soon on their laptops.

518855 2007-01-24 20:08:00 I guess it all comes down to what looks best for you. From what I've seen with both Plasma and LCD neither looks inviting when analog SD TV is shown on it. They all look great with HD Content.

I'm holding off until they start to seel them, with Digital tuners and even HD tuners would be nice but I can't see HD tuners arriving any time soon.

518857 2007-01-25 01:52:00 Some sales people will tell you LCD is better, some will tell you Plasma is better, the truth is some brands do better LCD and some brands do better Plasma .

Sony for instance no longer produced plasma TV's . They have decided that it's a better bet putting all their R+D money into one technology and because of this have become leaders in that field .

If I was you, I'd spend a lot of time doing research before investing, and whatever you do don't listen to the commission only salesman that will tell you that his product is superior, just to get the sale . Or worse yet, the salesman that really doesn't know what he's talking about, but pretends too .

I have a feeling T you are set to buy a LCD,in the end they are not bad,but have a way to go re versatility of CRT.

They all look great with HD Content. The X-series Bravia does a decent job of SD analogue considering what it is dealing with. It doesn't look quite as clear as it did on our old Sony Trinitron CRT, but still very clear give the fact the screen is significantly bigger. I would expect the S and V-series (which are closer to the prices of the Toshiba ones you mentioned) to give similar results (they should be better than the analogue transmissions they usually have in the shops on the display units provided you have a good aerial and decent reception). In the end, I don't think there is a huge difference between major brand name televisions in each price bracket. I don't think you would have any issues with Sony Bravia televisions (though I haven't had a chance to test all the features on ours yet), but I'm sure Toshiba would also be fine (see if you can find some reviews on the net). maccrazy (6741)
