727976 2008-12-11 21:06:00 Hi all. I want to reformat / restore the HDD on my Asus laptop using the restore disc's that came with it. I used them before when I installed a larger drive, was simple. The thing is how do I do it with the OS already up and running? I thought it would autorun when I inserted the disc but nothing happened, I opened the folders on the CD and tried a few of the files nothing worked. Any idea's?
Thanks

727977 2008-12-11 21:10:00 Most of those restore CD's require the PC to boot from them - they cant restore while windows is running.

Put the first ( if theres more than 1) CD in the drive, turn off the laptop, restart it, as long as it boots from the CD first, then the restore process should start.

Some PC's / Laptops require you to hit a certain key first to boot from CD, or has to be set in the BIOS to boot from CD first.

Edited: Just remember this will wipe your drive , make sure you have backed up any data before doing this.

727978 2008-12-11 21:19:00 Boot with the O/S Recovery CD. Make sure CD/DVD is set as first boot device in the BIOS>
Then when it asks for the driver cd, shut it down.
Boot back up, let it complete the WIndows install then insert the driver CD. It comes up with a list of drivers and apps you can choose to install.
Its a million times faster than letting it do the driver CD at stage 1.

727979 2008-12-12 08:00:00 Thanks, obviosly not set to boot from CD in bios. What key do I hit during to starup to get to the bios options? XPPro. 4Lowie (10869)
727980 2008-12-12 08:04:00 F8 or F10 or F11, when u turn the PC on it gives several options across the bottom of the screen, but you have to choose quickly GameJunkie (72)
727981 2008-12-12 08:27:00 F8 gave us safe mode options, didn't see bios mentioned at all. 4Lowie (10869)
727982 2008-12-12 08:31:00 did other options show up as well? GameJunkie (72)
727983 2008-12-12 08:52:00 Alsorts of safe mode options, boot logging, debugging mode, disable automatic restart plus others. 4Lowie (10869)
727984 2008-12-12 08:58:00 could be either the delete button or F2 GameJunkie (72)
727985 2008-12-12 17:40:00 the del key will put you into BIOS

but you should be able to push F12 to go into the boot device menu and select the drive to boot from (Which in the case would be your CD Drive)

Make sure you have the disc in before you start your computer :)
