727527 2008-12-11 00:05:00 My computers specs are:

Amd athlon 64 3800+
1.25 gb ram
8600gt
160gb sata
300w psu

I have $150 to spend on my computer before christmas (buying presents).
What should I upgrade? I was thinking of a dual core since my single core is getting old. What do you think?

Thanks ;)

727528 2008-12-11 00:07:00 What's the motherboard?
What's the brand and rating of the PSU?

If the PSU could handle it something like a 5000+ X2 or 5200+ X2 along with another gig of ram would be good.

These bits.
Oh, you have $150. Well go buy another toy then and save up until you can do it properly. Not worth it as it stands.

727532 2008-12-11 03:18:00 Not harsh............realistic. AMD doesn't cut it for gaming anymore.
Which means a major upgrade,.
If you upgrade the garphics you'll also have to upgrade the PSU.
see?

727533 2008-12-11 07:52:00 And then if you don't want to bottleneck your new GPU, then you'll need to get a new CPU. That will mean a new motherboard too, most likely.

And while you're at it you might as well get some more RAM.

You might be able to keep the case. Maybe the DVD (if it's not a CD player) will be fine.

Don't call it a new computer, just call it vigourously reconditioned. It hurts less that way.

not really harsh, pretty solid call :)
I'm leaning towards maybe taking the ram up to 2gb, its in your budget and would certainly help.

727536 2008-12-11 11:07:00 Ive even had to bite the bullet and upgrade, I had a similar spec'd PC myself and its easier to just hold off a little until after Christmas (Yes, the latest and greatest games you get for Christmas might not run at 100% right away), but with the prices coming down ... See something like this isnt too bad in terms of bang-for-buck!:
