727511 2008-12-10 22:49:00 Great, another little problem . My computer seems to be filled with them lately .

You know how with a messenger an IM box will flash when someone sends you a message? Well my WLM has decided to not do it randomly now (or maybe it does it, but something unhighlights them after a while) . It's sort of annoying, I went about an hour without replying to someone last night because their IM wasn't highlighted when I came back to the computer .

Does anyone else use WLM and do you know of such a problem? I'm using version 8 . 1 which might be out of date, but it hasn't been a problem before now .

727513 2008-12-10 23:19:00 The only thing I can think of is that there was a Windows update yesterday morning...nothing else should have changed. Using Windows XP, by the way. Bussani (14313)
727514 2008-12-10 23:25:00 Just a thought. On your messenger window>>Tools>>Options>>Alerts and Sounds and see if the check mark is in the box for Display alerts when a message is received.
Sometimes a 'little nobody' goes in and changes your settings.

Yeah, it's checked . It's not doing it all the time, you see -- it seems random .

I actually haven't seen it happen yet . It seems to work as it should, but then I'll go away from the computer, come back and someone would have messaged me but it hasn't highlighted the IM . I can't seem to reproduce it by triggering screensavers or anything, so I just can't figure it out . . .

WLM has been nothing but trouble for me lately . If it does it one more time I'll probably switch to Trillian .

727516 2008-12-11 00:34:00 Hm, it seems I can sort of recreate the problem. If I don't have any windows highlighted, someone sends me a message, the screen saver is on, and then I come back from the screen saver, windows seems to make a Window the focus (without bringing it to the front though). If it does this on an IM that was highlighted, of course, then it takes the highlight away.

I don't know if this is what happened before, because I don't see why it would choose to set the focus on the 3rd IM in my taskbar rather than the first... Bah, it's very confusing.

And just now it said I was signed out on my contact's lists when I wasn't. It wouldn't say I was signed in until they relogged in. MSN's going to give me an ulcer at this rate.

727517 2008-12-11 01:41:00 Have you tried uninstalling WLM? Reboot and re-install it?

I know these things drive us crazy, I spent a couple of hours yesterday trying to overcome a problem the latest java update caused in a game I play. From general comments in our game league, it was causing problems for others as well. Eventually I uninstalled the latest java update and installed the previous version. Worked like a charm.

727518 2008-12-11 04:53:00 Thanks for the suggestion. Re-installing it is my last resort if I can help it. I have a feeling it might not be the software itself, just something else stealing the focus from my IMs or something. I don't know, I'll wait for it to happen again.

The whole me showing up as offline to everyone randomly was a bit of a worry because a while ago I thought my MSN had been hijacked. I'd decided it wasn't, but now I'm not so sure again. I'll keep an eye on it, maybe it's just a poorly timed coincidence. MSN is good at those.

Edit: If these little problems persist I might have to post a Hijack this log. Maybe there's something my adware and virus scanners aren't finding.
