727431 2008-12-10 10:26:00 I installed Ubuntu 8.1 on a flash drive & I can't get my computer to boot off it. My motherboard is a gigabyte GA-MA78GPM-DS2H

The flash drive does not show up as a hard drive in the BIOS, and none of the USB boot options work (USB HDD, USB FDD, USB CR-ROM & USB ZIP)

727432 2008-12-10 17:54:00 check to see if its detected as a removable drive ie floopy some of mine are beama (111)
727433 2008-12-10 20:17:00 The flash drive probably isnt bootable. Not all flash drives are.

Even if a BIOS supports booting from one, it doesnt mean you can boot from a flash drive

The 4 GB I won in here, I found isnt bootable. Even tho the BIOS on the PC supports it. And the flash drive appears in the BIOS as a removable disk

That really sucks. I bought a 4gB kingston flash drive for running linux off, and it is detected in the post screen, but I can't boot off it. Sounds just like your situation.

It doesn't appear to detect as a floppy drive either - set first boot device to floppy & second to USB floppy & it still doesn't boot off it.

I'll have to use the pendrivelinux bootloader CD, which is inconvenient.

Does anyone have a flash drive they can boot off? I would be interested in seeing what brands support that feature
