520911 2007-01-30 23:26:00 Hi, I have not read or seen Vista. All I have is saw Campbell Live and parts of TV3 news. So assume me like any other consumer idiot :p

Campbell live went via saying that few computers will allow it to work full potential and Microsoft says 600k in NZ can handle it, of course I think that assumes minimum requirements.

Would it be far fetched in saying while it may not be as much as 600k in NZ, it may not be as few as Campbell Live make it out to be? I mean, they went via on the show saying, you may need a HD LCD/Plasma screen, a new video card, sound card.

I assume HD is not available in computer LCD/CRT and laptop screen  So for the desktop PC or laptop PC out there they cannot take advantage of that anyway. Most computers are corporate computers, most are harvey norman 'supermarket' computers, even if you bought a brand name $3k or more you may just get a mid/low range ATI/Nvidia.

1. Would it be right to say its full of luxury options.
2. The most computers may be able to use it but not take adv of it.
3. There are alternatives (other than DX10 for gamers). I would assume if a person wanted great sounds they could do that with other window versions by upgrading the speakers/sound card and I (assume) if one had a HD LCD/Plasma softwares like PowerDVD can take adv of that without needing Vista. Am I correct?
4. I think most pple will eventually switch to Vista, like how many pple voiced when it was win2k vs XP. They may not take adv of all the features but its new and they want to get it. This is from a consumers point of view, not Press F1's or the IT field or business. Either buy or upgrade.
5. I have not looked at them, some PCs were Vista ready certified. That could of been anything, surely they wouldn't have a flash HD screen or fancy sounds. They could install it I guess and it works for the net and emailing...

For a typical family person, ok, what is there to gain from Vista, despite how minature? I see the searchers are better from what I seen on TV. But I doubt the avg person would upgrade the sounds and displays. Aero looks nice. This thing performance tweaking of hybrid/flash HD sounds nuts. I didn't even know they were release yet. From the outside, looks like a new paint job overall for Vista. Something new that the avg person probably would get. Another money success for MS.

That about sums it up.

520913 2007-01-30 23:37:00 I tested my PC with the Vista upgrade thing, it said this is Vista compat.

Only thing was the tuner. But I'm not too worried bout that.

You don't need another vid/soundcard.

I would say the speed and amount of ram would be the main requirement.

Altho I wont be getting it, anytime soon.

Didn't see Campbell live, so know nothing about what was said.

520914 2007-01-30 23:41:00 I went over to MS site and it says the basic (non Aero). Hey, is there different version, if you want Aero do you have to pay more for that version or is that just a term it uses (when options are enabled or disabled)? Edit, yeah there is indeed a diff version, LOL. Buy a more $$ version just to get a feature.

For the basic (non Aero) why does it say you need a DX9 video card? I assume builtin video works like for the white collar or mother who checks on email and types a letter?

Edit.
So .. loved to hear it on the news when hackers get hold of it, they probably have already   Geoff Palmer was saying Vista has teamed up with anti copying Hollywood and it does a check each 60 seconds if the system has been altered.

520915 2007-01-30 23:45:00 I got my wife to video tape it. It was a fairly well balanced interview/bit of reporting which JC is pretty well known for. They interview'd PC World's Geoff Palmer, as well as a computer scientist who had issues with the DRM restrictions in Vista, the also interviewed a Microsoft rep and discussed the GUI and specs.

They basic versions of Vista are not much of an improvement over XP, it is not till you go up$$ a bit that the new features start to become available.

520916 2007-01-30 23:59:00 I really want Vista right now. Looks really good. I know my computer can handle it well, although I'll be buying another gig of RAM to make it 2GB. qazwsxokmijn (102)
520917 2007-01-31 00:14:00 I did get a bit of a chance to look at a laptop running Vista at a Bond and Bond store yesterday when a Microsoft rep demo'd it for me. Looks wise it is very impressive, very glossy, very slick although for me there was a sense of dejavu, stuff that I have already been using for the last 3 years or so had been given a Microsoft look to it. I am sure for those who are looking forward to it should be fairly happy I guess. winmacguy (3367)

520919 2007-01-31 01:06:00 I'll try and explain Nomad.

Most people won't change. Eventually most people end up with the latest O/S anyway because they buy PCs with the thing already on it.
And eventually other software vendors stop writing stuff for the older O/Ss so those that resisted have to anyway.

You don't need it. Mr Gates is in the business of making lots of money and he gets this by telling people its a necessary thing with all sorts of amazing features you can't manage without.

Its hype.
This apparently didn't work as well as he liked last time so this time he will get the gamers by only allowing DX10 for Vista.

There is Linux but Linux is still not mainstream so will not have much of an effect on The Gates Empire.
There are too many distros, theres all the fiddling about with drivers, theres no DX support. So much for that idea.

There is MAC O/S but until recently there wasn't much software that you could run on a MAc and the damn things are even more expensive anyway.
Maybe Mr Jobs will seize the opportunity..........doubt it though.

Meanwhile we can all remain clam and continue using XP or 98 or whatever just like we were doing last week.

My only motivation to upgrade to Vista is for DX10 games, and until I see a DX10 game I really want, or Vista gaming performance somehow whips XP, then I'm staying away from it.

If you look at my previous post about XP vs Vista benchmarks, XP actually wins in most cases. And sometimes rather significantly. So yeah. XP is fine for me.
