520503 2007-01-29 22:49:00 Hi Guys,

Not quite a computer related thread but reading through previous threads on this forum it is one that may have common interest.

I'm replacing all the light switches in our house and have sucessfully replaced all so far which have all been identified by the four wire contacts as 1,C,2,Loop.

I have now come across one that looks the same but is slightly different in layout. It's contacts are identified as 1,2,3,4.

Does anyone know how to reconcile 1,C,2,Loop with 1,2,3,4?

The old switch is 1,2,3,4 and new replacement switch is 1,C,2,Loop.

Regards

Chris

I assume you haven't got a meter. :D

If there are only two wires, it doesn't matter how they are connected: 1 and C(ommon) will probably be the correct ones. If the switch is then "up" for "on", either turn it upside down or use the "2" terminal. ;)

If there are more wires:
"Loop" is just for joining two wires, without involving them in switching. If there are two black (or blue) wires twisted together, they will be the neutral wires, and should go to the Loop terminal, and the other two wires will go to "C" and "1" as before.

Anyway..I get a real kick out of the wiring codes youse guys have..."black or blue as neutral"...Hmmmm....

White is the ONLY neutral allowed in the US...gads..think how a transplanted electrician from either country in the country of the other could burn the whole continent/island down!

BTW: UP is ON here!

Well, of course it is.
Remember Upsidedown Land?

520507 2007-01-31 08:02:00 Thanks Guys,

On closer examination I note that the live wires are joined together into a connector and just the neutral and green enter the switch - I'll leave this one to the electrician and watch what he does.

Thanks all round.

520508 2007-02-01 00:51:00 Switch between neutral and earth? Curious. :D Graham L (2)
520509 2007-02-01 00:58:00 It seems to be some sort of intermittent switch.

I went to Master Trade who sell electrical components and just the switch part alone costs $42 odd and you can't reconcile to the 1,C,2,Loop type which is a $7 bit.

One for the pros here - something to learn while he does it.

House is only 12 odd years old and electrcian was not too surprised when I described it all to him.

520510 2007-02-01 01:37:00 Is it an Intermediate switch ie part of a 3+ lighting arrangement? PaulD (232)
520511 2007-02-01 01:38:00 Perhaps a dimmer. Graham L (2)
520512 2007-02-01 01:48:00 3+ Lighting? - that's what he asked me.

Just one circuit, two switches so that the lights can be turned on or off if one is either upstairs or downstairs.

No dimmer on this either.
