520453 2007-01-29 21:17:00 Hi Team

Some 15-20 years back I bought a small square plastic 250ml pot of marine chrome cleaner . It was an off-white gel-like paste that had a rather pungent odour and was supposed to be used with good ventilation . It had a yellow and black label and was one of a range of products branded "Doctor" something or other, or in this instance maybe "Chrome Doctor" .

I was using it to clean 30 year old window hardware and it was the most amazing product . It would take a window catch that looked beyond redemption, dissolve all the corrosion by-products and turn it into a bright and shiny "like new" fitting, and the effects were long-lasting .

Yes, sadly I've run out, and Mrs T has me working on phase three of stage two of our renovations (or is it phase two of stage three? I forget where I am up to as the plans change frequently and without notification,) which means I need to restore some more window catches .

The shop has gone, the label on the pot passed away some years ago, and internet searches have proved fruitless, so I'm hoping an PF1 boatie might either know the product or use a good alternative .

Any ideas? Do chrome wheel cleaners work well and have a lasting effect or are they just for shining-up after the weekly wash?

Cheers

Is that a product you get from the local service station Metla, or do you need a specialty supplier?

Thanks

520457 2007-01-30 09:37:00 Hard to say, Cant hurt to try the servo, Last tube I purchased some was a number of years ago, In fact I think I have only ever bought 2 tubes in the last 15 years.

So either its really economical or I dont do a lot of polishing :illogical

I did see it at Mega Mitre 10 a few days ago.

520458 2007-01-30 09:42:00 Autosol. In a big tube like toothpaste. Last bought a tube in 1954 when one of the pipes on my Triumph twin blued up through overheating. Yes. It was German too. Scouse (83)
