519114 2007-01-25 05:44:00 I need to go onto a "Go Large" type plan to satisfy my flatmates this year. Has anyone had any dealings with either iHug's "Broadband 3" or Woosh's "Orbit Flat Rate". In terms of speed etc. We will have homeline with iHug, but want the better ADSL plan. I note that Woosh has a better traffic management plan than iHug, so am prob going to go with them, unless people have been having issues with Woosh.

Thanks,

Roddy

Woosh suck.
I got called out yesterday as a guy had just come back from Woosh in town with a shiny new wireless connection kit. He was told to "plug it in." He did. And waited, nothing happened so he rung the helpdesk.
They told him "sorry, we can't help you".
Thats it - one question - were the lights showing on top of the modem - no questions on what he had done/not done, nothing.

I go over, insert the setup CD, install the driver etc (Win98 PC - modem using USB), all up and running.

Then I wrote him a much larger than normal bill, told him to:
A) Ring and complain to the supervisor about the idiot that told him to just plug it in.
B) Send the bill to Woosh.

Worst "helpdesk" I've ever come across.

519116 2007-01-25 06:26:00 Yeah I've also heard bad things about iHug's helpline - flatmates were with them last year.
I called up Woosh just before to ask if they can connect me on iHug's homeline service, the guy said he didn't know.
I'm not too concerned about help desks though, more concerned about speeds :p

519117 2007-01-25 08:19:00 DO NOT go with ihug. Read the thread I've made regarding my relationship with ihug:

pressf1.co.nz

Sure, mine was an old plan, but considering they'd do this.....think again.

519119 2007-01-25 09:48:00 Been with Woosh for over a year and a half. I was one of the first ones to join their phone/BB plan. It took me about 30 mins to set up with the help of the helpdesk guys. Every time I have called, the helpdesk has been good, I wouldn't say fantastic but hey, I;m still with them. Just make sure that you're in a good coverage zone and get a Booster Antenna from them just in case. I was with Ihug dial-up and their help-desk was terrible. Go with Woosh, few niggles but much better once it is set up and your used to it. beeswax34 (63)
519120 2007-01-25 10:11:00 Have a little faith.. at this point in time, understand that the broadband situation is bull. Ihug is ok, forget what people say about speeds, usually the ISP is fine* unless its a go large problem.. or a variation of that type of plan. Orcon is a very promising company...

*usually the number of people connected to the exchange makes the speed ok or nasty

519121 2007-01-25 10:23:00 Just to clarify, I'm going on ADSL, not their pathetic excuse for wireless.

Orcon's "Unlimited" has a clause saying it's got a 20GB cap.

And what are you going to to do when one flatmate decides to download a movie? Or torrents? Or herds of MP3s

519123 2007-01-26 04:31:00 ....*usually the number of people connected to the exchange makes the speed ok or nastyIn a fast growing industry like the computer/broadband one, the first thing we can expect is problems caused by high growth rates not being matched by hi rates of upgrade. New fiber gets laid, an overloaded exchange (if it's one of the lucky to remain) gets fast, anyone connected to it gets good broadband, those still connected to redundant exchanges get poorer service till they get moved to fiber running a shiny new box in their block/street/whatever that connects to one of the fast remaining points.

Basicly this has nothing to do with the ISP, but the telco, it is being attended to, and all we can do it wait our turn for a decent connection.

If your street has crappy ADSL then that's the end of that option unless you wait.
You can choose woosh IF you are close to one of their towers, or are prepared to modify a satilite dish to help improve the Ariel,
You can choose cable if you are in a telstra area

All this winging about the help desk and so forth, well OK, there is a point, but the key options are above, and they all work, subject to the obvious variables
