519538 2007-01-29 00:33:00 Is microsoft giving away fee copies of office 2007 this time? For Office 2003, they gave away 10 copies to the first 10 people at each Noel Leeming Store in NZ.

Anybody heard anything about whether they are doing this or not?

519539 2007-01-29 00:52:00 The comment in today's Herald was that because Office 2007 was also going to be released with Vista that MS won't be giving away free copies. winmacguy (3367)
519540 2007-01-29 01:59:00 I'll be getting it within a couple of months, Just for a change from XP. I have been mulling over the idea of buying a Mac for the last couple of weeks, But that thought gets cured everytime I visit the apple site and see what sort of overpriced-underspecced crap they have on offer.
Do be careful Met,you had Safari salivating for a min there.

519541 2007-01-29 02:21:00 I've been using the beta of Vista and love it! I wish I could purchase it tonight but a thousand bucks for the Ultimate version is pretty expensive right now... Especially since my trial hasnt run out :-) PhilG (8125)
519542 2007-01-29 02:22:00 Unfortunately for Metla, Apple doesn't aim to compete with the do-it-yourself- PC builder. winmacguy (3367)
519543 2007-01-29 02:25:00 blah blah blah, blah blah blah. Blah Blah, blah blah etc etc etc.

Mater: You know, I once knew this girl Doreen. Good-looking girl. Looked just like a Jaguar, only she was a truck! You know, I used to crash into her just so I could spoke to her.

Lightning McQueen: What... are you talking about?

Mater: I dunno.

519544 2007-01-29 02:29:00 So what apart from the OS appeals to you about Apple, Metla? winmacguy (3367)

$1000- for a single user OS is fraudulent theft. The cost for the upgrade versions, as advertised by DSE, is a pure con.

I hear that you may as well not consider anything other than Home Ultimate if you intend to use your PC for anything more demanding than email, surfing and office apps.

We'll have to look to the sales figures in a few months time to gage whether "dupes" and "dopes" have truly become synonymous.

What the hell makes you think the OS appeals to me? The OS on any system has to be stable and let me run the programs I want to run, Nothing more, Its generally only Mac heads that get all wet over their OS, Its like a car twerp raving about their tires.

The question is...Does it do its job?

Yes?, Good, then shut up about it.

519547 2007-01-29 02:45:00 Vista is rather worrying.

Here's a company with a reputation for writing software with major security flaws who've decided to do a major rewrite of their TCP stack - a rather important part of the system, both functionality & security wise.

What's so great about Aero? It's just eye-candy. If you want eye-candy, just get fluxbox on Linux, it uses much less resources, is easy to change, and awesome looking, here's some pictures:

Microsoft hasn't even realised the power of multiple "Desktops".

Driver revocation - Microsoft will now have the power in Vista to revoke a drivers signature wich will make the driver/hardware cease to function. That's rather scary, right?

Then there's the bit about Vista not playing "premium/comercial" content if your hardware doesn't have specific content protection mechanisms.

I could go on and on. But what's the point? All I really need to say is: By using Windows Vista you're not getting would you should be able to get out of your hardware, instead you're hardware is being used to encrypt data being sent to/from your video/sound card so YOU can't mod/emulate it. Freedom? 'sif, you're paying for a jail for your hardware.
