520848 2007-02-02 09:50:00 It's true, he said so here: pressf1.co.nz

That's why he's making such a big issue over the use of the expression "Bible basher". He himself is what we would call a "Bible basher".

Anyhow, all religions are nuts, Look at basic christianity, God not only made us in his image but came down and visited us?

Lmfao, what arrogant fool came up with that dribble.

I couldn't agree with you more Metla.

But Mac fanatic's don't kill people by denying medical treatment (blood transfusions). If you'd lost a friend because the JW's had indoctrinated them to refuse blood, you might begin to appreciate how dangerous they are.

Don't get me started.

As usual, Mets hit the nail on the head.

Mackin writes "Don't get me started."
Well OK, but its started me up  and (Mods take note) trying my best to keep within the PF1 rules of decency, here goes...

I have a couple of friends who are JWs. At a BBQ they were praying their hearts out during grace and I couldn't help thinking if they ever bothered to do research on the JWs they would confront some unpleasant truths and may be less inclined to knock on so many doors to 'spread the faith'. It seems to me that basically the JWs are good people, leading (or trying to lead) clean upstanding lives as solid helpful citizens. Good on them, and I am not sarcastic here. I'd rather have friends and neighbours who lead 'good clean lives' than riff raff, hoons or whatever the term is for those who are disrespectful, selfish and who hurt others.

However I draw the line when religious nuts - and yes, Bible Bashers - go around trying to convert others, feeling that their narrow interpretation of the Bible, Koran, etc. is the best and only Way to the Divine. Unfortunately many churchy religious people are like this. And they fail to see their church as a business, intent on converting so as to rake in more money to keep those the upper hierarchy in power. The Mormons seem to have the best (or worst depending on your viewpoint) business and by God they sure know how to cover up their ugly history and keep their members in control. Again, they seem to lead 'good clean lives', so good on them.

Since we have nicely hijacked this thread and learned such shocking things as Surfer-the-JW (Mackin, you must have it correct: "That's why he's making such a big issue ..."), have a look here: http://www.jesusneverexisted.com/ Its just a start; there are links on that site and all the evidence is there if anyone wants to UNwash their Christian brainwashing. I offer this to show PF1ers how exact Metla can be (see his quote above). Many bible scholars (as I have heard on our National Radio) realise the acute lack of historical evidence about Jesus, but seeing Him as a myth can be more powerful and does not, for me at least, devalue the power of the Christ figure.

And if anyone thinks a 'nice' religion like Bahai is any different, think again. While they advocate an acceptance of all religions, that is only because it is to convert the world to the Bahai faith - this is a fact. The Bahai's have some very nasty practices such as shunning for eternity anyone who rocks the boat, and this means shunning their entire extended family. And if they try to leave the Bahai faith it is nearly impossible to do so - I have three friends who have tried. The Bahai faith has Islamic roots and are controlled by a conservative patriarchial council of men (no women), much to the surprise of those who swallow the party line about acceptance of women.

Still, though, I would drive any of my religious friends to their church or temple, as long as they don't try to push their beliefs on others or criticise other religions. Spiritual practice, imho, is important for most (but not all) of us to lead a healthy life. Unfortunately many do not know the difference between spirituality and relgion. Being religious does not always equate with being spiritual.

There ARE some respectful, decent religious people around. A friend of mine who is an Anglican priest is one - it is refreshing hearing her liberal, accepting views, but she pays the price for not being safely conservative. Here is another such person that I admire, a man who had the courage to say what he believed: Anglican Bishop Richard Randerson, who declared he was an agnostic and recently decided to resign and retire. Read about it here: www.nzherald.co.nz

In a way we have not really hijacked this thread. Remember that the video was exposing ignorance.
