This XP cd you're trying to use. Does it have a slipstreamed service pack in it?

728046 2008-12-12 04:58:00 If the old hdd works now, does windows detect the new hdd, and see it in disk management??

As unallocated?? If you've tried this?

My head is swimming :waughh:. Well, its like this: yes, I believe disk management did see it - at least at one time - but I am not too sure now. I need to reconnect the old hd and see what happens... Its not difficult to do but I need a break from the pc as it has been frustrating so I will try to do it later today. I have used Disk Management numerous times. I now have WinXP on the 80 Gb hd as well as the 120 Gb hd, so I am getting better at the Boot Selection screen and fiddling with the mobo to hd leads! (Remember I am not a techie and only a couple of years ago I could not even replace RAM.)

I could see the partition on the new hd and the rest was "Unallocated". I don't know what I will see when I reconnect and get back into Windows, because the UBD programs were supposed to remove the partition.

Yes, disk management does see the new hd: 465.67 Gb unallocated. The partition is gone so that part of the UBD seems to have been successful.

728049 2008-12-12 07:03:00 Wow - Seagate's are normally so reliable Yes Seagates are reliable - only had a few fail over the years, BUT like any PC component you can get duds - I have had Brand new drives faulty from the start - or fail within a week.

Normally If I suspect a drive is faulty from the start - I would put a known working drive on the PC - If the PC does what you want it to on this drive, but the new one plays silly buggers - RMA it.

Better to replace it NOW while you dont have all your data on, than have it fail within a short time and lose every thing.

I have sent a "Detailed fault description" to Ascent and am waiting for the "authorisation to return an item" .

Thanks to all who have helped me with the old and new hd problems .
