| 520830 | 2007-01-31 17:44:00 | Just remember that most of this was in Texas - the state that gave the world the Bush family, what else would you expect? LBJ, Lyndon Johnson was the last president to get the USA stuck in a long unwinnable war - Vietnam. He was from Texas, governor of that state, just like GWBush. Many Americans know that Texas is full of conservative gun-toting Bible bashing cowboys. Hilary or Obama will balance things out nicely. |

That red part is wrong . . . it should read: conservative, gun-toting Bible-quoting . Ya see . . they THINK they are doing the Lord's work by forcing conservatism and guns into the hands of constituents . "Bashing" means they don't like/use/believe the Bible at all and hate those who DO use it . . . . definitely NOT the case of ultra conservatives . BTW: I knew a Texan once that I liked . . . they may not all be oil-millionairres and Ewings . |

See Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org Bible thumper (also Bible basher, or Bible Beater) is a derisive term used to describe Christian fundamentalists, or anyone perceived as aggressively pushing their religious beliefs upon those who do not share them. As an insult, its target domain is broad and can often extend to anyone engaged in a public show of religiosity, fundamentalist or not. The term alludes to a preacher thumping his hand hard down on the lectern and the Bible on it to emphasize a point during a sermon. |

| 520834 | 2007-01-31 20:35:00 | More on Texas, Bush, and stupid Americans: I found this when Googling "Bible Basher". www.gurteen.com Take two iconic states: Texas and Massachusetts. In some ways they were the two states competing in the last election. One is the home of Harvard, gay marriage, high taxes and social permissiveness. The other is Bush country, solidly Republican, traditional and gun-toting. Massachusetts voted for John Kerry over George W Bush 62% to 37%; Texas voted for Bush over Kerry 61% to 38%. Ask yourself a simple question: which state has the highest divorce rate? Marriage was a key issue in the last election, with Massachusetts gay marriages becoming a symbol of alleged blue state decadence and moral decay. But in fact Massachusetts has the lowest divorce rate in the country at 2.4 divorces per 1,000 inhabitants. Texas, which until recently made private gay sex a crime, has a divorce rate of 4.1. A fluke? Not at all. The states with the highest divorce rates are Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Texas. The states with the lowest divorce rates are: Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont. Every one of the high divorce rate states went for Bush. Every one of the low divorce rate states went for Kerry. The Bible Belt divorce rate is roughly 50% higher than the national average.  |

| 520835 | 2007-01-31 20:40:00 | A link (www.spareroom.co.nz) to a video from this morning's Herald. Mike. Here is an easier way to see that video, the direct link to it on YouTube: www.youtube.com Thanks Mike. I think it has been mentioned previously here on PF1 but its certainly a good one. It should be compulsory viewing for all students in the USA - along with the correct answers. They may then understand why Bush got voted in twice and started the craziness in Iraq. |

| 520836 | 2007-01-31 21:23:00 | I don't know the local players here...is this Winston guy some sort of hero or just a comic? He is a Mininster of Parliament, an MP, like a congressman. Outspoken, often a muckraker and while he usually is a good orator he often speaks cr*p. He is a hero to some, and a comic to others! BTW, the video originally mentioned by Mike, is made by The Chasers in Australia. They have some good ones on YouTube. Here is one where they took a Trojan Horse around various places to see if they could "leave it overnight". The best part is when they took it to the Australian Army Headquarters Land Command, complete with Greek Soldiers inside. A hoot!!  What Have We Learned From History? www.youtube.com |
