520665 2007-01-31 05:51:00 Change the PC....what component of the PC exactly does it take for the first code to become useless?

The code doesn't becomes useless, (it'll be the only key you get if u buy Vista). And you don't get another key, unless u buy 2 versions of Vista.

And it has nothing to do with changing hardware. If you change the hardware too many times (like XP) it may tell u to reactivate windows.

It would be more than 1 component (wasn't it 10 or something with XP)?

The code will become useless if u try and install Vista on another computer (like XP) when it has already been installed and activated.

520666 2007-01-31 08:31:00 Thanks for the help guys. But I rang Microsoft NZ a couple of hours ago and they told me the drawback of OEM.

Once OEM Vista has been installed on a PC, you can upgrade every single thing in that PC, excluding the motherboard.

You need a new socket motherboard? Or did it cough and died? Tough luck. You'll have to buy a new Vista and motherboard.

If you just change your CPU/HDD/GPU, and the likes, Vista may ask you to reactivate it. That can be done by calling Microsoft and ask for the reactivation thingy.

Well, I guess OEM it is for me then. I'm not ready to jump into Core 2 Duo just yet. Mostly because I'm poor. :p :( :(

The motherboard when u buy one comes with the drivers, thats what the drivers are for.

Ah no, you can ring MS and tell them the old mobo died and see if they can help you activate it. Stuffed if I'd buy another mobo and vista just coz the old mobo died.

Yup thats right. Thats if activation doesn't work after u change whatever.

520668 2007-01-31 08:49:00 What do you mean that's what the drivers are for?

Oh, and the guy said they can't (won't) care if your motherboard died.

520669 2007-01-31 08:54:00 Motherboards have their own drivers like for the sound etc, thats why they come with a CD with the drivers on them.

Well that guys an idiot then :D

520670 2007-01-31 09:50:00 If the guy is wrong....than that means retail version is only for a total noob, like my 10-year old brother? qazwsxokmijn (102)
520671 2007-01-31 10:10:00 I can sorta agree with the OEM, its sold with the main part - motherboard, if you get a new one for whatever reason then the OEM will be void.

If a person got a Compaq with OEM, if its stripped down and upgraded or rebuilt then the OEM no longer applies. If it needs repair, then Compaq most likely would probably give you a motherboard swap of the same one...... and you can continue using OEM.

520672 2007-01-31 10:43:00 Vista upgrade invalidates your XP key:

yes

for those of us who actually want all the features, including the aero interface, we have to pay for the $600+ version. and the stupid "you can only reinstall twice" rule still applies:yuck:

i know for xp i just call them every time i need to reactivate, as a result i have 3 XP pro computers off the same disk:p

i suspect they have since changed the rules to prevent this for vista
