| 519124 | 2007-01-26 04:40:00 | I'll never forgive IHUG for blocking all other ISPs websites to their customers as they did for a week or so many years ago. I think that was just after the Southern Cross cable was bought into service, and IHUG no longer had the huge advantage of access to overseas bandwidth. Having said that, i know people using IHUG who have a good continuous trouble free operation, so i won't knock it. |

Although my reasons to loathe ihug is different to yours, but this just makes me boil even more. |

| 519126 | 2007-01-26 05:31:00 | Basicly this has nothing to do with the ISP, but the telco, it is being attended to, and all we can do it wait our turn for a decent connection. I've heard that some ISPs have poor international bandwidth provisioning, and as such poor international speeds at peak times. My understanding is it's the ISPs responsibility to sort this side of things out, Telecom is just in charge of the copper wires and exchanges. If your street has crappy ADSL then that's the end of that option unless you wait. You can choose woosh IF you are close to one of their towers, or are prepared to modify a satilite dish to help improve the Ariel, You can choose cable if you are in a telstra area Nah we're going with ADSL. And what are you going to to do when one flatmate decides to download a movie? Or torrents? Or herds of MP3s Hence the reason for not using Orcon. There are 4 of us that are torrent whores. |

Your quite right of course, however the biggest bottleneck seems to often be poor local lines. I really must do some research as to if the Southern cross cable is fully lit up yet. Either way i'm ready to place bets we get another cable this decade, owned by telstra, and connecting us via Australasia. :D |

To what I have read some time last year the Southern cross cable is only half, not even that full yet. Either way i'm ready to place bets we get another cable this decade, owned by telstra, and connecting us via Australasia. :D You may be half right or wrong there, but to the sounds of it( to what I have read) NZ will be getting another cable soon. |

| 519129 | 2007-01-26 07:43:00 | www.southerncrosscables.com That's the part that's not the bottleneck - usually Local distribution is usually the bottleneck, but i can't find a link to telecoms master plans where hundreds of exchanges get axed and the remaining 17 service the community with the help of hundreds if not thousands of roadside cabenets connecting local copper to fiber. I'd love to see a fresh link tho :) It might help people understand why they have to wait their turn for upgrades. |

| 519130 | 2007-01-29 12:18:00 | DO NOT go with ihug. Read the thread I've made regarding my relationship with ihug: pressf1.co.nz Sure, mine was an old plan, but considering they'd do this.....think again. I love ihug at the moment. And am enjoying the broadband 3 plan, the one with the fair use thingy. img216.imageshack.us You just need to know how to cheat their system. :D |
