727884 2008-12-11 09:15:00 Dear all,
The CD-player of my friend's laptop has become faulty. If you are living in Auckland and interested in fixing the CD-player by replacing it with another equivalent, could you please PM me your price quotes?

Cheers :)

727885 2008-12-11 23:23:00 Do it yourself. Not too hard getting them out, They are expensive though pctek (84)
727886 2008-12-12 02:08:00 Maybe cheapest to buy a used unit off eBay or Trademe and put it in yourself, better yet if the laptop has a modular bay that justs pops out with a press of a button.

I bought a eBay mini pci card for the modem + ethernet on a laptop, $25US when a new one retails for $400-500USD.

727887 2008-12-12 03:58:00 I haven't got the experience nor the confidence to agree that it is not hard to get it out.

Ever noticed the scarcity of my posts that relate to hardware-fixing? :p

What laptop model? Still CD, pretty old then. If is it worth it ....

Don't buy yet, try to take it out first.

727889 2008-12-12 05:58:00 Manufacturer may even have instructions to take out ... is it a modular hot swappable bay or screwdriver version?

If it is hot swappable .. all you do is press a button and the whole drive ejects out and you grab it with your nails and yank the whole drive out. To put in .. just slide it in until it clicks. New DVD RW or whatever woolah..

727890 2008-12-13 06:08:00 I'm working full-time, so even if I think I know how to do the job, I don't have the time to do that. Renmoo (66)

It really is simple, you don't take the laptop apart, a couple of screws and the unit comes out.

727892 2008-12-13 09:18:00 If it is a hot swappable drive, you don't even need a screwdriver. Press one button and it pops out like a open DVD-ROM instead the whole drive pops out .. pull out and that's it. Slide the new one in .. and snaps into place and it works without rebooting. 5 seconds maybe to take out and 5 seconds to put in, within that 3 seconds for reaching for the drive on the table.

PCtek, for non swappable ones, don't you need to undo the base and take the keyboard off to reach the screws of the CD drive? :D

I assume you know that it is reliable / trustworthy?
