727896 2008-12-11 08:12:00 I'm looking at starting up a website (should be able to help me generate revenues in the near future) and was wondering what everyone regards or knows to be the best internet hosting site/company?

I would be looking at an option which is cheap, fast, and gives me a lot of room for files etc. I also would like it to be a direct site, eg not the host's name with a '/curbd' extension on the end of the address.

Thanks in advance for any info.

727897 2008-12-11 09:52:00 There are a few members on the forum who do hosting so just wait for them to have a look at this thread and get back to you. beeswax34 (63)
727898 2008-12-11 10:04:00 This would probably be a good starting point: weblist.co.nz maccrazy (6741)
727899 2008-12-11 10:59:00 There used to be this company that advertised themselves as the cheapest with the most space in NZ ... was only like $3 a month or something, there even used to be an ad that would show here on PF1, and they had this great big comparison chart of the different web host providers in NZ ... who were they? I believe that they lost a lot of their customers websites after they encountered problems, and since then they put their prices up. Also I remember that chart, and it was incorrect, and even though they had packages that looked like the cheapest, when you could get better value elsewhere.

The most important thing to look for is reliability, and word of mouth is the best way to find a hosting provider. I would also recommend getting one that has cPanel, which is the best hosting management software I have used. You get what you pay for with hosting, and 'cheapest' is hardly ever the best.

727901 2008-12-11 17:31:00 Although I have limited experience here; I would say, have a look at Open Host
http://www.openhost.co.nz/

Might suit, there might be better.

727902 2008-12-11 18:46:00 Thanks, I'm looking through a few options now.

It would of course be possible to 'migrate' from one hosting company to another, whilst keeping the same layout and content on my webpage wouldn't it? That would mean I could start cheap, then maybe buy a space at a somehow better place, and only the address name would change. correct?

Thanks for the help, I hope to get my site up by January or Feb of next year :)

Edit- would you suggest I first make my website in a program before I buy the domain?
Sorry I'm new to this :P

727903 2008-12-11 18:57:00 Yes you can change hosts, and no, I'd buy the domain if its available .. at $34 per-year (less than $4 a month), get it now .. ;) Chilling_Silence (9)

Really? I know that CPanel is the most commonly used control panel, but personally I much prefer Interworx (while others prefer Plesk etc). If you don't have a control panel preference Curbd, don't limit yourself to CPanel.

Definitely agree with that! I don't know how many people I've heard complain when their $3 per month for a server worth of space and bandwidth host suspends their site due to CPU usage.

You can switch, but it is preferable not to. Content can be transferred relatively easily. Control panel settings can also be transferred, even between control panels to a certain extent, but sometimes things won't go to plan and you have to manually go through and make corrections for any settings that aren't transferred. Your domain name would not need to change, you would just need to change the nameservers to those of your new host.

I'd say get the domain now - even if you haven't decided on your host. There is always a risk someone else will take it in the meantime. You should be looking at around US$10-12 per year for a .com/.net/.org and around $60-70 for a .nz domain.

Really? Having a website isn't an automatic money generator.

I use Kiwiwebhost.
Not the cheapest around but they are in NZ. And the servers are in NZ.
And I have never had any major issues and customer service is great.

Thats my criteria before price.
