727457 2008-12-10 19:20:00 What does it mean when I get this message in NERO Burning: "Book Type Set To: DVD+ROM"

Can I not use the +ROM-type disks for archiving some videos?

Will they play OK in my DVD players and not just in the computer optical?

I ask because I got 500 free Memorex DVD+R discs from a friend and if they aren't gonna work, I can just use them for . . . uh . . . . . . what?

727458 2008-12-10 20:08:00 Yea you should have no problems.
I have found that DVD+R discs are more reliable than the DVD-R discs. They seem to play in more standalone DVD players.

727459 2008-12-10 20:14:00 It means it'll be more compatible with whatever you put it in.

You can either set it by opening up Nero (the main program - recorder menu / choose recorder option)

Highlight the burner / options down the bottom / change it to DVD-ROM, it's usually on automatic.

Or before you burn whatever to DVD. However, not all burners have this option

727460 2008-12-10 20:25:00 Setting the book type to DVD-ROM instead of leaving it as DVD+R means the disc will be more compabtible with some older set top boxes which may have problems playing non DVD-ROM discs.

I set all my discs to DVD-ROM, even DVD+RW. The book type for each disc can only be set once I think (the first time it is burnt), even for DVD+RW.

727461 2008-12-10 21:24:00 So, does this mean that I can change the type of DVD via the burner?

I was under the impression that the + or - values were in the matrix of the physical disc itself and not re-settable.

727462 2008-12-10 21:45:00 You can't change the type of the disc, but you can change how the disc appears to other devices.

So the dvd player will think the disc is a DVD-ROM, even if it is actually a DVD+R or DVD+RW.

727463 2008-12-10 21:49:00 Correct, the DVD-ROM option makes the dvd you've burned more compatible with any dvd player.

And you've got more chance of the dvd player reading it / and playing it
