519157 2007-01-25 05:57:00 I know someone who does not use the computer for grunty work but he complains of slowness. I don't think he is upgrading as of yet .. but this is what I think.

He uses for mainly normal stuff, like email, the net, yahoo games like chess online, he has BB ADSL and now switching to Telstra but not sure if he is going, maybe they have connection charges he dislike, dunno. Anyway, he uses the computer to write articles and stuff, pretty simple really. He does not even use Excel or edit photo's. He uses Skype and MSN but only now and then. He watches movies on it.

I thought since he not need the grunt but he wants to see a difference. I thought maybe (I'm a bit outdated since I arn't planning a new computer for myself). I thought of the lines of a newish (above avg) motherboard and CPU (dual core) with the latest chipset (nForce or Intel). 1GB of RAM DDR. A basic video card PCI-X ATI or Nvidia to free up the motherboard or maybe a Matrox. A pair of WD Raptors in a RAID formation (striping) assuming that is the faster speed one (not mirroring).

Edit, he has a motherboard all in one with a Intel P4 2.4. 512MB at this mo.
I think its more than enof .. but he says otherwise.

519158 2007-01-25 06:08:00 What the hell for??? Just add some more RAM to his existing PC and get him to run CCleaner and take stuff out of the startup.
Thats all he needs....

519159 2007-01-25 06:16:00 Yeah I got him to use Clean Up, I found that better than CCleaner.
I was thinking that since he wants it fast, if an upgrade "has" to go ahead, I thought of disk speeds?

Yeah I know, A Celeron/Sempron would be enof IMHO.
512MB is enof as well.

519161 2007-01-25 06:32:00 take stuff out of the startup.

That's a good one, don't think it'll happen. Goes in one ear and comes out the other. I dunno what crap he has on his. He has a external HDD as well I heard.

519162 2007-01-25 07:27:00 slowness.....slowness in what?

what is going slow. no point changing hardware if its an OS/software fault thats simply going to return.

Comming from someone who sits in front of a Dell or HP PC and have you ever had a serious session on a Mac.

Sounds like something with onboard graphics using shared memory. Adding a video card, even a low end 64 meg one will make a big difference.

519166 2007-01-25 15:37:00 those specs are plenty for runnign light apps and to upgrade the pc to what you are suggesting is a ridiculous overkill..........theres some issues with the system obviously and the problem is NOT hardware...... drcspy (146)
