519060 2007-01-25 01:58:00 I have a Pioneer DV 383 player & a Pioneer DVR 540H recorder, both play Divx.

I have connected both units to my Marantz A/V amp. The audio out is through the coaxial digital out. Both units are setup correctly in their audio/video out settings.

When I play a Xvid .avi (700MB Torrent file) that is in DD 5.1 sound on the player, it plays faultlessly.
On the recorder is a different story. At random intervals, the sound will drop out between 1 & 2 seconds & then return. Reverse play to a bit before the dropout & it will play past the point OK. It will drop out further on.
The Marantz display says that there is no audio signal.

When I convert the .avi file to DVD using Nero 7, it plays faultlessly on DVD.

I have eliminated the interconnect cables as the culprits by swapping them between the units.

I then burnt to a CD at 8x (slowest Nero will allow) to see if that makes a difference, it doesn't.
Tried a different brand of CD (Mitsubishi), no difference.

I suspect the pickup/associated electronics of sound parameters of the recorder is not quite in spec.

Any Ideas?

Is there a difference between various Rip's of Xvid/Divx?

I want to try to convert some of my retail DVDs into Divx & Xvid files, so I can see what the recorder does with them, before getting in touch with Pioneer about a possible fault.

Of those who use these converters, what are their names & what results do you get?
There are all sorts of converters out there but of unknown quality.

Not a fault, I would say the recorder simply needs a firmware update. Yes you can flashupdate DVD players and recorders.

Contact Pioneer they will be able to source the firmware update with instructions on how to flash it.

Also the 383 has a mod firmware you may find this link of interest

519062 2007-01-27 07:02:00 Thanks apsattv.

I have read that link & am delving into what is Xvid & Divx.
I am a real beginner, in that I have no prior knowledge of what those two formats are.

I think I need to convert some of my retail 5.1 DVDs into Xvid & then see if
the problem persists, as I have read that the Xvid codec can have a lot of variables in how it is used.

Are you able to recommend a DVD to Xvid and/or Divx converter?
I have Nero 7, if that is any use?

I will get in touch with Pioneer soon but am a little puzzled in that the recorder was manufactured in September 2006 & even though the player has not got a date of manufacture on it, the player was bought July 2006 a bit cheaper than the 393 which had replaced it. (383's may have been first manufactures in June 2005 onward?) The 383 must have an older firmware that the 540 recorder. (I may be wrong).

After exploring further links which spring from the link you gave, I find that the 383 player has "Firmware region 4 Rom Version 1.21"

& the 540 recorder has "Version 7.34 // Syscon: release_361 // Tuflcon:527.000*//Drive:1.05+ // Device: E2R-FE 1.2// Region 14"

That is not a typo, it says region 14! (what's that region?) LOL

Can you make any sense out of that info above?

519063 2007-01-28 06:16:00 Sorry don't know much about the recorder. But mostly like with a version code like that they maybe update it every hour ;)

For divx/xvid be sure you have the updated versions of both Codecs. Winavi is a good converter that you could try. But i think it sounds like a software problem in the dvd recorder.

519064 2007-01-28 08:58:00 Convert using Nero Recode - Its the best.. using STD quality, a 700MB file will look good from a DVD.

Using the AVC (h.264) will take about 8x longer, but it'l be worth it seeing as you can get the "Cinema" resolution at an even better lookin quality and still only 700MB

Give that a shot and see how you go. You might need to pass the DVD through DVD Shrink first...

519065 2007-01-29 00:44:00 Thanks for that advice, I did not even know that Nero 7 had that option.

Unfortunately, both the Pioneer player & recorder does not support the Nero MPEG-4 format.
I get "can't play disc".

I have just downloaded WinAVI Convert & will look at that.
