729124 2008-12-14 23:18:00 Hey, I'm hoping someone can help!

Right, I've got a dual boot running on my laptop (Vista and Ubuntu 8 . 10) which went fine . After seeing the benefits (don't know why I haven't done it earlier) and knowing my parents desktop (running XP) was becoming increasingly slow, I strongly suggested a dual boot for them as well (they need XP for certain programs) .

Filled with confidence from my smooth-ish laptop dual boot I put in the Live CD, checked the obvious stuff worked . I then eventually was able to shrink the XP partition almost in half to put Ubuntu on . When I installed Ubuntu it actually shrinked my XP partition and squashed them on together rather than using the space I freed up .

I continued to get Ubuntu up to date . My next mission was to install GNUCash to provide an alternative to Quickbooks . This required glib etc and took a while and didn't even work in the end .

At this point I decided that I had better check up on the XP boot . So I chose XP from GRUB boot loader and "NTLDR is missing" error came up . Basically after hours of troubleshooting I'm getting problems with the "hal" file, "NTLDR" and chkdsk run from recovery disk returns "The volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems" . I've tried fixboot and mbr (no luck) .

I then tried the Ubuntu Live CD and used GParted to remove the linux partition in the hope to free up space, no luck . I can't increase the size of the XP partition, incedentally, due to the squashing of Ubuntu onto it, it now has 3mb of free space which undoubtedly is causing problems .

Set Up;
150gb hdd, 74gb XP partition (FAT16) (rest is unallocated))
In Ubuntu (Live CD) the 74gb is apparently empty with 3mb free and a total size of 10mb :-s
In Knoppix (Live CD) the 74gb is showing files but the names are nonsense and the sizes are also (somehow my files take up 230gb) .
I was hoping use a Live CD to delete some files and free up some space but can't .

Hope someone can help get XP back

Many Thanks
Dre

729125 2008-12-14 23:28:00 Hi there dre, welcome to PressF1

NTLDR is the windows boot loader, and it sounds like it's been corrupted.

Get your XP Install disc and run a repair install, and you should be back up and running :)

729126 2008-12-14 23:41:00 Thanks for the speedy reply. Is it the bronze hologram disc as this is the only XP one I've got? It comes up with the 3 options, set up XP, repair or quit
Will the install write over any data?

729127 2008-12-15 00:02:00 You should choose the repair option, it will automatically go through and repair the XP installation, but not effect Documents and Settings. It won't write over any data, but it might be a good idea to boot into the ubuntu live disc and delete your linux partitions and create a new NTFS partition. Then, either combine the two, or move some data off one to the other to allow some space for the recovery. Best of luck :) mabix (10146)
729128 2008-12-15 00:10:00 The repair option goes to recovery console and is waiting for commands??
I tried the install option and created a new partition to install it on however it comes up with "Setup has determined that drive C: is corrupted and cannot be repaired. Should I choose to install XP on first partition instead?

729129 2008-12-15 00:13:00 Plus I can't access the data using a Live CD to move it somewhere safer dre (14409)
729130 2008-12-15 00:34:00 Just ran DIR in recovery console and came up with all random numbers and symbols for what I guess is folder names, I don't like the look of that dre (14409)
729131 2008-12-15 00:44:00 Don't do repair install, try this:

Boot into your XP cd
Then when prompted select the option to enter the recovery console. Select the installation to be repaired followed by the administrator password.
Type Fixboot and answer yes to the prompt.
Then type in the following commands and leave all spaces eactly as they appear here.
CD \
ATTRIB -H NTLDR
ATTRIB -S NTLDR
ATTRIB -R NTLDR
ATTRIB -H NTDETECT.COM
ATTRIB -S NTDETECT.COM
ATTRIB -R NTDETECT.COM
COPY X:\I386\NTLDR C:\ ( X IS THE LETTER OF YOUR CDROM )
COPY X:\I386\NTDETECT.COM C:\ ( X IS THE LETTER OF YOUR CDROM )
Afterwards reboot

729132 2008-12-15 00:47:00 There is no choice of install. When I try to change to a directory such as WINDOWS, it says it's not found dre (14409)
729133 2008-12-15 00:48:00 Mabix is referring possibly to a repair install - you hit the R at the wrong time ( to early) .

Heres how to do a repair install .

You will need your 25 digit product key for this .

Place XP CD in drive: Reboot or shutdown and start PC .

1 . When the Press any key to boot from CD message is displayed on your screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD .

2 . Press ENTER when you see the message To setup Windows XP now, and then press ENTER displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen .

3 . Do not choose the option to press R to use the Recovery Console .

4 . In the Windows XP Licensing Agreement, press F8 to agree to the license agreement .

NOTE: In the NEXT step if it doesn't locate your old OS STOP! As any further actions may result in wiping your data .

5 . Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in the box, and then press R to repair Windows XP .

6 . Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Setup .
