728741 2008-12-13 18:57:00 I have a new box with XP SP3 installed and I take the BB cable from another puter and plug it in to the XP one.Shows "connected to network" but does not show up on the network.Packets are being sent but no inwards and I can ping the router but can not ping the box from the router.Windows firewall is OFF.All settings for the network appear correct except I am not sure how to check my password etc for my ISP.I must stress this is a brand new box and useing a Realtec driver for the network card. kjaada (253)
728742 2008-12-13 19:09:00 Did you share a folder on it??

You have to create and share a folder before it'll appear on the network

Is the workgroup name the same as the others on the network?

728744 2008-12-13 19:43:00 Is there anything in device manager with a ?

Since you've just installed XP / SP3 on this system, I take it you did install the chipset / LAN / sound drivers on it after as well ??

Since SP3 doesnt install these drivers. What password are you talking about?? If a computer is already connected to your ISP, you dont need the password for networked PC's

To connect to the internet

728745 2008-12-13 19:57:00 All looks good in device manager,Realtec is shown as working properly.
I did install all MOBO required drivers. You have answered my query about the password it was the Router one.

728746 2008-12-13 21:40:00 I assume you are getting a IP from the router ?

Click start/ Run type in CMD <Press Enter> type in ipconfig make sure the PC is getting a IP from your router - the IP address should be the same as the routers gateway except the last number will be different.

If you get an address that starts with 169.X.X.X - you dont have a connection.

IF you are try downloading Winsockfix (www.softpedia.com) run it and see if it repairs the problem.

728747 2008-12-14 01:44:00 Tried that,no joy,the error now is "limited or no connectivity" Just wondering tho could it make a difference if the new machine is 64bit and I have put my 2001 WXP on it which may
only be for 32bit ? and if so how can I find if the new machine is 32 or 64.
Everything is working really well and fast as,except the network connection.
I did also try W-Ubuntu (no joy again)but it works from "inside windows"

You didnt put a crossover on the connection did you, because you dont need one
Speedy Gonzales (78)
728750 2008-12-14 03:38:00 No crossover.
I have just wiped XP and put Ubuntu on and it will still not connect.
