728391 2008-12-12 21:51:00 I don't need a 1000 w power supply; not into big graphics card, gaming, etc. My pc now has a Hyena (yes I know Hyena is not the tops), 300 w.

Are these any good? I don't want to spend big $$.

Needs to be quiet. The Hyena's hum is annoying.

SATA

Do most PS's (and mobo's) only have provision for 2 hard drives?

728392 2008-12-12 21:59:00 Mobos with IDE, usually have 2 IDE connectors on the mobo for IDE hdd's or cd/dvd's.

Altho, mobos like this one, only have 1 IDE connector on it. Since its got 6 SATA connectors onboard

Some PSU's do have more than 1 molex on it. The gigabyte PSU here has 5 -6 SATA power adapters on it, but theyre pretty close together.

So, unless the cd's or hdd's are close together, you'll be lucky to use all of the adapters on it

I'm using the TT 430w here on the other PC. Never had a prob with it

728393 2008-12-12 22:04:00 The Thermaltake one you posted are usually good lower Priced Ones, BUT I'd double check that price Same unit (www.ascent.co.nz) But not OEM at Ascent - Even at that $44 is cheaper than what I pay wholesale - could be old pricing - Just check.

Another one I use and is not that expensive - Very Quiet is the Corsair 450 (www.ascent.co.nz) - once again advertised on Ascent. The leads on the Corsair are good, almost to good - and MANY plugs - How Many Connections (www.imagef1.net.nz(Large).JPG) do you want - thats from a Corsair 450 I have in the workshop. The Corsair has One big Fan (www.imagef1.net.nz(Large).JPG) - which makes it very quiet.

728394 2008-12-13 01:05:00 There is no such thing as a good inexpensive PSU.

Good and cheap do not go together.

Corsair and Enermax are top of my list. Nothing else goes anywhere near my gaming systems.

Not too bad are Coolermaster and SIlverstone.

Totally agree with pctek:thumbs: never get a cheap psu if you value your computer!!!

Would you buy a cheap unreliable car and have your family in it and the breaks fail?
Same as buying a cheap psu and killing your computer....you just dont do it!!!:illogical:horrified:badpc:

728397 2008-12-13 02:03:00 I'm using a Thermaltake 430W unit. Have had it for nearly 2 years now... runs like a dream and doesn't make a howling noise either.

I think I paid like $75 for it from memory.... the price may have been low but it's a good quality product.

I agree with pctel though good and cheap very seldom go together... but with the number of vendors out there pricing has become quite competitive... you can pick up a sub 500W unit without break $150 if you looked hard enough and did sufficient research.

Cheers.

The Corsair looks good. I like this bit: "Over Current/Voltage/Power Protection, Under Voltage Protection, and Short Circuit Protection provide maximum safety to your critical system components. High quality Japanese capacitors provide uncompromised performance and reliability." ...plus the fact that it is quiet and has plenty of leads. However, Thermaltake does seem good for the price.

Wainuitech, that $44 price must be old. That's an interesting photo you posted, doubt if I would ever use all those leads!

:thanks Thanks to everyone else for the info.

It would be nice to plan for the future so how can I tell if a PS will run a duo or quad core system?
Strommer (42)
728400 2008-12-13 03:51:00 Make sure its got a 24 pin ATX power connector (not 20 pin, unless its got the extra 4 connectors on it) for a start.

You'll probably need it for the mobo

I'm only running a gigabyte 460w..Which has the above on a dual core system. Nothing wrong with it
