What Windows should be-

Since Windows 95, Microsoft have been promising that they will deliver an easy, simple, stable os.
twelve years later and we have just been delivered Windows Vista. Is it what they promised?

In my opinion, No.

Where Microsoft have gone wrong, in my opinion, is the limitations of years of building on the
windows code-base. They should have done an entire fresh rack with vista.

But then you may ask what Windows Should be? What should we have on our computers?

Well, in the busniess world, Windows needs to be stupendously simple. An office worker needs
to be confident that they can turn on their computers, and that it will work, not worrying
that someone might hack in and steal their precious company records. Windows needs to be easily
deployable, and at least up and running on every computer in the office over night. It needs to
be reliable, and it needs to talk to other computers completley flawlessly. There needs to be no
alerts about security, updates or anything that could worry a person. And it needs to be organized
and self-keeping.

What about the home? Once again, it needs to be stupendously simple, yet customizable. It needs to
offer media features, intergration with other home computers, and it needs to work. It can't freeze,
it can't say that it needs to update itself, it just needs to shut up and do it. A user needs to be
confident that they can turn it on and it will just work.
But there needs to be room for the people who like to play around with the OS as well, so basically
2 versions- Home and Professional, like XP, but with completley different aspects on what those two
words mean.

And yes, we have to agree, Microsoft have delivered on some of these points. But how long until, lets
say, a flaw is found in vista? How long till we go through the same **** we went through with XP? What
I don't understand is why they can't just make one Operating System, and make it perfect.

For example, they completley killed the idea of simple when they included UAC (User Account Control.)
If I go into System Properties, and Click device manager, and the screen goes semi-dark and pops up saying
Windows needs your permission to continue- If you started this action, click continue- no prompt for your
password, just two buttons. Then when I click "details" itd displays two file paths, one with a switch added
to the end.

What the hell is the normal user supposed to make of this? Most will hit continue, but some will just sit
back and stare at the screen, thinking they've broken the computer, and call out for a techie which they are
wasting their money. And what the hell does this have to do with my User Account?

Thats Microsoft For You-

But what really annoys me? The fact that once you upgrade to Windows Vista, your XP COA becomes invalid-
Windows Vista EULA
13. UPGRADES. To use upgrade software, you must first be licensed for the software that is eligiblefor the upgrade.
Upon upgrade, this agreement takes the place of the agreement for the software you upgraded from.
After you upgrade, you may no longer use the software you upgraded from.

That is bull****. If i went out and bought a copy of XP, then bought Vista and wanted to get rid of Vista and
move back to XP, I can't. As soon as Windows Vista has been activated, My XP Key becomes Invalid

Just may way of ranting at Microsoft :-)

and if you think I'm kidding then put Vista next to Tiger and compare them

Mabix, I think you actually "Get it". Your whole post hits the nail on the head. Just a pity you went out and bought Vista.

521210 2007-01-31 21:33:00 Cool. Interesting considering it comes from a PC Mag.
I'm waiting to see what Leopard will have. Since Vista is the equivalent of about Mac 10.3 or there abouts

Apparently Apple are taking X11 and Darwine and advancing on that technology so you will be able to run executables within os x. If they succeed, I can see OS 10.5 taking over in a few years. But the real killer will be if they allow us PC users to install OS X on our PC's. They would win outright.

The reason why Steve will never allow that to happen is because it would take away the control factor that he has with the current set up. I don't think he is actually worried about huge gains in market share for the sake it. Apple's profit was up 76% YTD for the last quarter, their market share grows about 30% percent every year. Apple could licence OS X to Micheal Dell this afternoon and have Dell PCs on the shop floor by next week (except that Dell sells online). If Steve did that he would loose all quality control of OS X since it would be possible to install it on any configuration of any PC on the market and you would probably end up with something resembling Windows Vista.

Don't worry Apple still have a lot of tricks up those mock turtle neck sleeves.

A recent prediction from Gartner had Apple passing Microsoft in profitibilty by 2010. (pure unsubstantiated speculation based on some analysts calculations at this point but not impossible)
