522338 2007-02-14 21:17:00 Common (partial) solution:

Use alternatives and/or substitutes for fossil fuels . Preferably something realistic, known to work and common such as nuclear-derived electricity . This will reduce CO2 emissions (and other pollutants) and dependence on something that comes from a war-torn region .

Wind/wave/solar are not reliable, not cost-effective, environmentally-damaging and cannot generate anywhere near enough useable energy . Geothermal and hydro are too environmentally-damaging . Biofuels are pies in the sky .

522340 2007-02-15 07:40:00 Oh dear.

We've just been given really important info about global warming with a statement from a gathering of acknowledged world experts. Finally, the " real oil."

This is not "scaremongering" from the media.
It's as authorative as you can get.

The IPCC report is extremely biased.

i agree. the only problem with nuclear power is we don't have the brains to run it and never will until we embrace nuclear technology.

and before the 'nuclear is evil' brigade start up it is the 3rd environmentally friendliest power source after solar and wind. over 95% of nuclear fuel is recycled and the rest can be shipped to aussie to be buried 10km underground along with all theirs

Hydro is good!.

i agree, but resource consent is bad. hell, we can't even put in new transmission lines, let alone dam up a valley

Some of the most intelligent people I have ever come across are NZders. We have plenty brains in NZ. It definitely not the lack of brains.

It is the lack of political and social will. At the moment, it seems only a real nasty shock will get things going. Petrol prices getting up to $5+ a litre, or rationing, should about do it.

At least that would get most of the Urban Assault Vehicles off the road

522346 2007-02-16 02:42:00 I hardly think a difference of opinion is linked with lack of brains or lack of will, Simply some don't share the mood of others, Kind of a bummer if your out numbered by the "others". Lmao.

Anyhow, Petrol at 5 bucks a liter wont make any difference, Its day is done, and we don't have to embrace nuclear power if we don't want to. Sure, If it was up to me Id commission a reactor (and some bombs) tomorrow, But at the end of the day it comes down to money, If NZ chooses to stick to its nuclear free principles over and above cheap energy then so be it.

And good for us if we do.

ah, sorry, by 'brains' i meant people qualified to run/build/maintain such things. i'm sure we're smart enough, but the smart people like to go overseas when they realise being a nuclear physicist doesn't offer great job prospects in a nuclear free zone.

of course building such a plant would create those jobs, but it may be difficult to fill said positions...

then again where i work if a laser breaks down we go on a several week long waiting list for either some asian guy or a german guy, both hired out at well over $100 an hour and we pay him from the moment he steps foot in the airport, that is the one in singapore/berlin) to when he gets back home:yuck:
